Film vs Novel Excerpt: Life of Pi

In both film and novel excerpts of The Life of Pi, Pi is alone on a lifeboat with a tiger, after the ship he was on sank. Even though both film and the novel have the same general idea, they differ in some parts. One difference was that in novel, hunger was emphasized in the beginning. “I thought of sustenance for the first time”. This shows that hunger was emphasized earlier in the novel excerpt. Pi thought about sustenance the next morning after the shipwreck.

However, in the film, Pi’s hunger was emphasized when the whale knocked over all of his food. Another difference was that in the novel excerpt, Pi uses a tarpaulin hook to Open the water cans. “I sharply brought it up against a hook”. This shows that in the novel, Pi was resourceful and he used the things around him. However, in the film, on top of the water cans is a can opener.

There are also many similarities in the film and novel.

One similarity is that in both the film and novel, Pi is alone on a lifeboat with animals in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after the ship he was on sank.  There was a storm raging above of him and sharks beneath him. According to the text, “I was alone and orphaned, in the middle of the Pacific, hanging onto an oar, an adult tiger in front of me, sharks beneath me, and a storm raging about me”. Therefore, the film and novel Life ofPi are similar and different in many ways.
