Choosing a Pediatric Career

Topics: Nursing

Since age fourteen I wanted to be a pediatric registered nurse. I had a spinal fusion correcting my scoliosis. At the time my parents and I were complete novices and did not understand any of the medical terminologies that the surgeons and physicians spoke to us about. This left me feeling uneasy and uncertain about what to expect next in my recovery process. The healthcare providers who supported me the most and to this day stand out vividly in my mind were the nurses that cared for me.

They took the time to explain everything to my family and me in terms that we could understand. They treated me like a person, took the time to get to know me, and maintained my privacy. Getting to be a patient and seeing what a difference a nurse can make on someone’s life was enough to lead me into the world of pediatric nursing. I started my nursing career in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Westchester Medical Center in New York.

There I was introduced to a vast variety of pediatric diagnoses. I also saw many readmissions and illnesses that could have been avoided due to lack of education and I quickly realized just how passionate I was about advocating and educating the patients and families I cared for. This passion continued as I transitioned my nursing career to the Medical University of South Carolina where I continue to work heavily with children who lack needed recourses and education to reach optimal wellbeing.

It is not always easy, but through creativity and perseverance we help can give families the tools they need to help improve the lives and healing of their children.

After almost five years as a registered nurse in  pediatric intensive care I aspire to further my education and earn my doctorate as a pediatric nurse practitioner. I love my current role at the bedside providing hands-on care and education to patients and families but my occupational goal is to play a larger role in maintaining the health and wellness of the pediatric community through counseling and medical guidance. I believe obtaining my doctorate through NYU’s School of Nursing will provide me with the knowledge, skills and opportunity to be successful in the realm I am striving for.

With the autonomy of an advanced practitioner I can dive deeper into a more diagnostic side of the profession using evidence-based research to provide optimal care in ways I have not been able to before. I strive for this, because I truly believe that a child’s health and quality of life should not be determined by where they live or the resources they have access to. It would be my greatest joy to provide safe quality care and education to an underprivileged population. With the help of NYU, I am hoping for the opportunity to do so.
