Breaking Bad and Lost are considered to be two of the best dramas in television history. The shows rank highly with other TV classic hits like The Wire, The Sopranos, and Star Trek. Like these shows, viewers have been kept glued to their screens andtheir cast hasbecome famous. Which one is the better show? We will compare the show’s plots, cast/characters, critical reception, viewers, popular culture and awards. Breaking Bad is a drama created by Vince Gilligan.

It is the story of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher struggling to make ends meet.

Soon after getting diagnosed with lung cancer, he turns to a life of crime. He starts producing the world’s purest methamphetamine (meth) with Jesse Pinkman. Walter soon becomes one of the biggest drug producers/kingpins in the United States. The cast/characters of the show made all of this possible. The main characters in this series are Walter White, Jesse Pinkman, Skylar White, Hank Schrader, Gustavo Fring, and Saul Goodman.

Walter and Jesse are the two characters that make the meth and become well known in the drug trade. Skylar is Walter’s wife whoeventually helps him launder money. Hank is Walter’s brother in-law who works for the DEA and later tries to arrest Walter for his crimes.

Gustavo is the owner of Los Pollos Hermanos, a Kentucky Fried Chicken type operation that serves as a front for his own meth business. Walter and Jesse become his cooks at one point in the series.

It is a show that follows the survivors of a commercial jet crash on a mysterious island. While on the island they deal with the forces of nature, but they also have to deal with the secrets of the island; like The Others and the Dharma Initiative. The show is told through a series of flashbacks, flash-forwards, time travel, and the present. The show wouldn’t work without its massive array of characters. The main characters in Lost are Jack Shepard, Kate Austen, John Locke, Ben Linus, and Desmond Hume. Jack and Kate are the leaders of the plane crash survivors. John was one of the plane crash survivors and plays a main role in the development of the show. Ben is the leader of the others. Desmond is part of the Dharma Initiative, and was found in one of their stations. The cast is incredibly deep and there are many more star characters. Star roles on the show switched from season to season with some characters getting killed off or reduced roles. The show as previously mentioned was rated as one of the best dramas of all time.

The show was praised for its character development, complexity, and it’s hidden meanings. Lost was by far more widely viewed over Breaking Bad. Each episode of Lost was watched over ten million times every season, but viewership declinedevery season. Breaking Bad never broke two million viewers throughout the first four seasons. It took until the series finale for the show to break ten million viewers. The finale had three hundred percent more viewers then the season four finale. Also, due to a partnership with Netflix, Breaking Bad viewership has skyrocketed both on TV and on Netflix. In popular culture, Lost has been mentioned in popular TV shows like 30 Rock, The Office, and The Simpsons. Hugo, one of the characters on Lost, was on the cover of an album by the band Weezer. Breaking Bad is one of the most recognizable shows in pop culture.

Bryan Cranston who plays Walter and Aaron Paul who plavs Jesse have been on multiple talk shows. Aaron Paul recently made appearances on Saturday Night Live. Lost has been nominated 251 times for a variety of awards. It won 57 of those awards. The biggest award the show won was the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy in 2005. Several Lost actors have been nominated for awards. Terry ‘Quinn and Michael Emerson are the only actors on the show to win Emmys; both won Best Supporting Actor. Matthew Fox has been nominated for 18 acting awards and most prominently won the Satellite award for best actor. Evangeline Lilly has been nominated for 15 acting awards. Breaking Bad has been nominated 151 times for a variety of awards, winning 50 times. Breaking Bad’s most prominent award was the 2013 Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

Bryan Cranston won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series three consecutive times and was nominated two other times. Aaron Paul won the Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series two times. Anna Gunn was Best Supporting Actress in a drama series in 2013. As you can tell, these are two of the most accomplished shows in television history. Both shows have combined for over 400 nominations and over 100 wins. Both shows have received accolades for being the best TV has to offer. If I had to choose one winner though, it would be Breaking Bad. Never has a show captivated me or the audience like Breaking Bad. The show has it all: heroes and villains, suspense, humor, love, and hate. The show has captivated its viewers and has kept on building into a suspenseful drama.
