When Stephan Lewis was appointed by the Organization of African Unity to a panel to investigate and issue a report on the Rwandan genocide, he saw that those people were forced to get it. Women were getting raped. Kids were born with it from their mother. He saw those communities were hopeless and depressed, and he knew he had to do something about that. So ever since 2001, Lewis has served as a special envoy to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan regarding HIV/AIDs in Africa. He has visited African communities a lot in his lifetime and didn’t give up until he has accomplished what he was set for, and that’s what makes a person an active global citizen. Stephan Lewis is an active global citizen because he always makes sure that people could always be involved and help communities with HIV & AIDS. Lewis discovered an organization called “The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF)”, and that foundation has developed a group called grassroots. The Grassroot group provides advice and education on HIV prevention, care, and treatment; distributing food, medication and other necessities. They also reach the sick and vulnerable through home-based health care and help orphans and vulnerable children to access and work through their grief. They also support grandmothers and citizens who care for orphaned children. Since 2003, a movement of more than 100,000 Canadians (and a growing number of people around the world) has supported the Stephen Lewis Foundation, making individual donations, and sending tribute gifts to friends. Many people have also taken part in the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, doing a Dare, and organized fundraising events in their communities. He was made the Scholar-in-Residence at the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University because of his knowledge in politics, social work, and diplomatic work.
