A Personal Interpretation of Lolita, a Novel by Vladimir Nabokov

Lolita is a novel written by the Russian author Vladimir Nabokov in which the main character of the intriguing story Humbert Humber, has a pedophile attraction toward his twelve years old stepdaughter.

He describes the passion and morbid obsession that he holds towards the girl in a vivid and detailed manner that engages and thrills the reader into the forbidden narrative, as well as evoking a sense of disgust from a moral point of view.

While these desires are considered a fetish that fits among mental disorders and is highly unaccepted by our society and federal laws, I believe that the love or passion that one feels towards any being is not a matter that can be decided upon, but rather it is a personal spontaneous feeling that cannot be judged by any other individuals.

However, actions in contrast to feelings, are not quite a subjective or personal issue as inner emotions/dilemmas are;  especially when another being gets involved or affected by one’s actions.

Until then it becomes a perfectly punishable act. Although in the small extract of Nabokov’s novel I did not find clear and compelling evidence that Humbert Humbert had committed the crime of rape, it does allude to this reprehensible behavior. In a conclusion, while understand and do stand for people’s right to feel and love free concepts, I condemn involving an innocent and nonconsensual being, with personal preference complexities.

– Process Note: How did your argument for/against Humbert target a specific audience?

What evidence substantiates your claims for/against his conviction? Does your argument make an ethical, emotional, or logical appeal, and why? My argument stands for and at the same time against Humbert Humbert, specifying under what circumstances I consider this fetish understandable or punishable.

It is highly targeted toward a specific audience since it shows a way more liberal point of view than what is mainly considered moral, ethical, or mentally sane in our society. Also means that the argument makes strongly evokes a moral appeal that is highly prone to polemic discussions.

I focused more on the complexity that exists in human nature, and understand that feelings are not to be decided upon, nor controlled. Making emphasis that as opposed to inner preferences, actions are indeed one’s responsibility. Which could also fall into an emotion-based argument.
