What makes a field interesting? It is the liking to the field , its usage in the modern day and how much more there is to research in the field. My favourite field is the field of modern day Astronomy. Astronomy is a branch of space science that applies the laws of physics and chemistry to explain the birth, life and death of stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae and other objects in the universe. It is then further divided into Astrophysics and Cosmology.
From childhood I have an interest in wanting to explore the unknown regions which lay in the universe, unrevealed to mankind. This field is about the study of celestial bodies and unknown secrets that are yet to be discovered about where we live in the universe. This field also explains about how the earth and the universe was actually formed millions of years ago.
This was a very unique field of interest in olden times but with the improvement of technology , study in this field has been common as now we can observe the universe while sitting on earth using a telescope.
There are many scopes in this field. One can apply for jobs in various companies like NASA, ISRO, IUCAA etc and bag a decent job of a good salary. This field mixes studies with the world of imagination. With hard work and determination, one can achieve anything in this field. Maths is the language of Astronomy. For eligibility of this field , one must be topnotch at mathematics and physics as this field is mostly based on calculations.
With increase in technology ,this is one of the best fields in study as there is still so much one can learn in this. Not even 1% of the real universe has actually been explored by us and there is still much to do. This is not a very easy field. Like other fields, you need a lot of hard work, determination and liking to the field. If one does not pursue this field with interest or liking towards it , then it is not possible to really achieve anything from this field.
In India you can apply for institutes such as Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Raman Research Institute (RRI), Indian Institute of Astronomy (IIA), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to find a comfortable position in Astronomy career. While you’ll most likely need a Ph.D. to become an astronomer, you can start preparing for your career in high school by taking lots of physics, math and computer science courses. Chemistry and other sciences will also be helpful. If you have a talent for math and physics, it’s not that hard. You will need to study seriously because Astronomy combines a lot of disciplines. You will seriously have to work on the math and physics and understand the interrelations. The puzzles of Astronomy will be a lot harder, possibly frustrating. We have to follow the path that all the important scientists of set and be like them. Some important scientists in this field were Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking , Edwin Hubble. Einstein once said, Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity. Also , Stephen Hawking said, We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.
The field of astronomy , though not so helpful in our day to day life , helps to quench the curiosity of everyone about the actual understanding about the universe we live in. Apart from that , it helps to foresee the major events like the sun’s lifespan , meteor fall prediction. Another major goal that astronomers wish to achieve is to find out about life on other planets which also braids the astronomy field.
If you are working on something that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. Where there is a will , there is a way.
