Pop Culture surrounds us all, and whether we are aware of it or not, it can influence us by changing the way we think. For example, changing a stance on a controversial subject, or possibly changing our actions and what we do every day. However, we could also affect Pop Culture by sharing videos, pictures or sharing something that’s becoming popular among people. Pop Culture is like a trend or something popular being shared to the mass public or even targeting certain groups.
The purpose of this paper is to explore what is Pop Culture and how it can affect us, or how we can have an on effect it.
Pop Culture is usually very popular at a certain time period to a group or society, a few groups to list could be potentially kids, book lovers, or people who love a certain brand of clothing, just to name a few. Some examples are pulled from “Reading Pop Culture” by Jeff Osbourne.
Some examples could be music from Beyoncé, clothes from Abercrombie & Fitch, The Hunger Games series, or the movie Frozen for kids. Each group having something they like at a given time, or something being created for that group to enjoy. Another example that could be a little more relatable would be the song Happy by Pharrell Williams that has 390 million on YouTube or Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke featuring, T.I. and Pharrell that has reached 561 million views on YouTube currently at the time of this writing.
Both songs were very popular when released for fans of each artist or genre. Constantly being played on radios and playlist,
both songs leaves a memory of their popularity and millions of people have enjoyed the song. Each example whether its music from artist, a book, or movie has been made available for millions to enjoy. Another example of Pop Culture and my personal favorite show was released in 2005. With a current rating of 96% of google users liking this show, and 8.4/10 on IMDB. This show is a good example of Pop Culture because this show can be found on multiple platforms such as YouTube, occasionally television, or sometimes on social media. This show gives us some extra perspectives on our culture and society by touching on some controversial subjects with a comedy and an interesting perspective from the creator.
Some subjects could include the creator’s view of some hip-hop artist unusual choices and decisions by creating similar characters that could easily be matched to a real-life celebrity or person that is the subject of ridicule, or historical events such as the former President Barack Obama being inaugurated into office, or even some scenarios of how influential and historical icons might react if in this present day and age to the current state of society. For the show’s wide and usually bold path, after the last season, it still highlights some faults in our society that we should address or observe some events more closely. Pop Culture influences us all and we can even change it. Television shows, music, books, and media from the internet can be a part of Pop Culture. When something is released to the mass public and its well-received by either the intended audience or even the public in general. Its a part of Pop Culture.
