Basically, socio-economic status (SES) is a concept giving a general description on the aspects such as education, income and occupation of different people hence, the element of social class within our communities. However, when viewed from the social class lens, the aspects of power, control and privilege are emphasized…. “SES affects the overall human functioning…Our physical and mental health, the neighborhoods in which we live, our daily activities, and our access to resources. Its effects can be observed across the life span.
Variance in socioeconomic status, such as disparities in the distribution of wealth, income, and access to resources, mitigate social problems. Low SES and its correlates, such as lower education, poverty, and poor health, ultimately affects our society as a whole…”
Precisely, the concept of socio-economic status to some degree is related to the issue of criminology. This is because of the social disadvantages such inequalities and disparities, which result from the aspect of class. Normally, in our societies some people are rich while others poor hence, the inequalities in almost all life aspects.
For instance, people facing financial constraints might sort into robbery in order to meet their daily demands thus the source of crimes. Consequently, the social economic theory deeply elaborates on how the socio-economic status is well articulated to the concept of criminology. “It turns out that advancing equal opportunity and economic empowerment is both morally right and good economics, because discrimination, poverty and ignorance restrict growth, while investments in education, infrastructure and scientific and technological research increase it, creating more good jobs and new wealth for all of us.
. ”.
Equally, it is quite vivid that at some point socio-economic status restrict positive growth and development especially in low income based societies, which could be as a result of economic inequalities. Conclusively, it is right to say that despite of the socio-economic differences, the aspect of SES is very potential in our societies as it allows transformations for better improvement. For example, the low class people will be noted and be put in the system of further improvements.
