The following sample essay on “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)”: еhe first time I was introduced to this topic I was 14 years old going to a yearly physical at the Children’s Hospital in Aurora. A doctor pointed out that I had an abnormal amount of hair on my body and mentioned that I may have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). There was no further explanation of the disorder and also never received follow up to schedule for testing and examination. This disorder was introduced to me again when I told a provider a year later that I haven’t gotten a period for 4 months and I did mention my hair problem.
I was recommended to get on birth control and to lose weight which I did tried both, but had difficulty losing weight. I will be discussing my research and knowledge about (PCOS) and how it can impacts one’s life and health as well as sharing research on possible treatments to help with the symptoms and prevent it from causing other health problems.
PCOS is a hormonal disorder or an imbalance of hormones in the body (Mayo Clinic). At least 10 million women are affected worldwide at ages 15-44 (Women’s Health). This does affect only women that are in the reproductive stages in life. Women actually don’t realize they have this disorder until they are trying to have children or have noticed abnormal physical appearances. Experts aren’t sure what is the cause and there is no cure right now, but here are signs and symptoms that women can look for and consider seeking treatment.
There are signs and symptoms that can be effects of PCOS:
Irregular periods that can be infrequent, irregular, or prolonged menstrual cycles are the most common sign.Excess androgen, elevated levels of male hormone may result in physical signs, such as excess facial hair and body hair (hirsutism), and occasionally severe acne and male-pattern baldness. Polycystic ovaries, ovaries might be enlarged and contain follicles that surround your eggs, the ovaries might fail to function. PCOS are typically more severe if you’re obese (Mayo Clinic)
The reason the body may produce a larger amount of androgen means that your cells are resistant to the action of insulin which causes more to be produced than normal increasing the production of androgen as well. Polycystic ovaries and other factors such as the lack of female hormones can lead to difficulty for women to get pregnant of they are trying.
Sign and symptoms usually appear around the time of your first menstrual cycle during puberty. PCOS can also develop when an individual gains rapid weight for example: I realized that I gained weight so fast because I went through hard times and I gained 35-40lbs in a short period amount of time and that’s when I started see physical changes on my body.
