City Of God Cinematography Analysis

The film City of God was directed by Fernando Meirelles and the setting of the film was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The film was released on January 17, 2003 and it was considered to be one of the most meaningful and gory movies that received 4.5 stars out of 5 stars from the film reviewers. The film was mostly shot in the poverty-stricken favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 19070’s. The film is about two boys choosing two different paths in the criminal minded world in the poorest neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.

The main protagonist of the film is Rocket who is a photographer, and the film’s plot is based off the narration by Rocket. He also documents the increasing drug-related violence in his poor neighborhood. The other main character is Li’l Ze, who is an ambitious drug dealer that uses Rockets photography as propaganda to increase his fame which leads to the beginning of a turf war between Li’l Ze and his enemy Knockout Ned.

The beginning of a turf war shows the violence and crime that happens in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
