Frequently people, who grew up and lived in big cities, have serious problems and even some fears when it is necessary for them to move to a small town. Personally I would agree that living in a big city is advantageous for those, who are concerned about developing career, especially in business or arts. But, at the same time, I am sure that growing up in a small town is absolutely wonderful and always results in numerous positive outcomes, both for children and their parents.
A small town is undoubtedly safe and quiet area for children to grow up and progress. Nobody will argue that rural areas have much cleaner environment and considerably less noise, than polluted and crowded territories of modern metropolises. Fresh air, healthy nutrition and beautiful views of nature perfectly contribute into proper development of children and advantage boosting of their physical activity, mental abilities and esthetic sensibility.
Besides, in small towns there are no such problems as busy traffic or public transportation.
That is why the rates of traffic accidents, as well as crime rates, are considerably lower in non-metropolitan areas. This makes small towns incomparably safer for children. Such negative activities, as forming gangs, getting involved into violence, bullying, alcoholism and drug abuse, are absolutely not popular among the youth and adolescents, living in rural communities.
One of the biggest advantages of rural life-style is total absence of hyper-social interaction. Usually, life in small towns is very much slower and calmer, because there are no rushing crowds and traffic jams.
Moreover, there are quite a few strangers on the streets and mostly people know each other well. That is why in such circumstances there are fewer reasons for parents to worry when their child is on the way to school, having a bicycle ride or a hike, etc.
As a rule, in small towns all the locations are close to each other and it is possible to reach necessary places much easier and faster. In addition, there are numerous wide opened air territories, like natural parks, forests, fields or beaches. Under the supervision of parents, children can use these areas as perfect playgrounds or lands for explorations and making discoveries.
Another advantage of growing up in a small town is communication. It is always possible to find someone to talk to and to share some opinions, thoughts or viewpoints. The most significant fact is that small towns could preserve that exceptional spirit of cooperation and unique culture of communities, which does not exist in modern metropolises anymore. In small towns people always willingly work together for mutual benefits, when the point comes to reconstruction of the school, cleaning the surrounding areas or donating books for municipal library. The community always helps its members in cases of illness, economical hardship, loss or other troubles.
Undoubtedly, growing up in such atmosphere of mutual support and understanding is priceless experience for children. Simplicity, sincerity and openness of rural communities favor development of corresponding personal qualities of children. Moreover, in this society a child will never feel isolated and be perfectly prepared for building his other social relationships.
Usually, rural life is strictly linked to farming and agriculture. Annual income and wealth of many families living in small towns are heavily dependent on agriculture, because a great deal of food is being harvested from the fields, gardens and farms. Certainly, parents traditionally make their children at an early age work on the fields and farms. Such activities assist children in developing, first of all, physical strength, along with such personal qualities, as workability, persistence, love to lands and nature, etc.
Finally, economic side of the issue can be considered. Despite of arguably limited career opportunities and prospects, earning a living in small towns is relatively easier than it is in big cities, because the prices for gas, food, housing, etc. are considerably lower. This allows parents to provide their children with all the necessary things, like high-quality food, cloths, toys, books, etc., and to make savings for education of their children (and, possibly, grandchildren), for helping and supporting them in the future, and so on.
Certainly, growing up in a big city has numerous advantages and positive sides. Big cities have more advanced infrastructure and facilities for entertainment, can provide with wider opportunities as to education and professional development, financial stability and more exciting life-style. But still for many people nothing can substitute unique culture of calm high-quality life in small towns, where grasses are greener, air is cleaner, and people are always friendly and helpful.
