My Personal and Academic Goals: Becoming a Lawyer or a Surgeon

Topics: Lawyers

Maya Angelo simply states, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” Honestly, I believe this speaks to how everyone has a purpose in life and that purpose may differ bases on the many factors of your strengths, goals, and your passion. My purpose is to make a difference in the lives of others through medicine and or law. I know my purpose is to make a difference in medicine and law is because helping people and arguing has always been a passion of mine and both law and medicine connect to those passions.

Like I stated previously everyone’s purpose is based in our strengths, goals, and passions. I call my strengths “LFFADD”, which stands for Leader, Futuristic, Focus, Achiever, Discipline, and Determined, these strengths connect to my many S,M.A.R.T goals. S.M,A.R.T goals stand for a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timelyt My goals are to be completely on my own by the time I graduate from college.

l plane on graduating from UCF with a bachelor‘s in criminal justice within four years, and to become a lawyer within the next 8 or 9 years. If I wanted to become a surgeon I would have to go to medial school as well has completing my internship, fellowship, and my residency. My personal Goal is to be on my own completely by the time I graduate.

This is very important to me because being on your own is one of the most important aspects of starting your life and becoming you own person as well as an adult. This goal relates to my purpose because I can’t help other until I am able to help myself right? Before I can make an impact on other’s lives I have to focus on getting myself to a place where I am not depending on others. I have always been taught by my older brothers not to depend too much on others and to be an independent and successful person so that when the time comes you will be able to “spread your wings and fly‘K I believe this to be very true because for me as a person I like to help people and I hate to depend on someone all the time.

I like to achieve goals and get things done, which ties into my strength achiever, focus and discipline. I believe in order to achieve a long term goal you need to create other goals and or follow certain steps to help you achieve your main goal. In order to achieve my personal goal, I will get a car, save money, build my credit and find an amazing place for me to live. There may be many obstacles when focusing on achieving this goal such as, I first would find a job with a stable income and to create a good budget to save money for my vehicle. Even though there are some obstacles in the way I can get passed them by looking for employment elsewhere for fulltime positions. My personal goal and academic goals are related due to the fact that both goals include the aspect of completing them by the time I graduate. My Academic goal is to graduate from the University of Central Florida (UCF) with a bachelor‘s degree in criminal justice within four years. This is an important goal because this is the first step in achieving my purpose I recently decided on this goal because I was unsure on the university I want to attend after I completed my two years at valencia collage.

I set this goal for myself while completing my education plan which helped me decide what university I wanted to attend. While completing my education plan I had to use my futuristic strength and picture my future and what is really going to be the right choice for me, In order to achieve this goal, I may have to overcome some obstacle, such as stay focused on the task at hand as well as time management. In order to overcome these obstacles, I will use my strengths such as Focus, Achiever, and Discipline in order to figure out a schedule as well as making sure I know my purpose to motivate me and help me stay on task my academic goal connects exactly to my career goal because it’s a huge part of achieving it.

My Career Goal is to become a lawyer or a surgeon after I graduate this goal is the most important step to achieving my purpose because this is when I become that person, that impacts people’s lives and maybe changes the face of medicine. This is the goal that‘s in order to achieve I will have to use all five of my strengths, Learner, Futuristic, Focus, Achiever, and Discipline, I will have to use these strengths when putting my arguments together and my opening and closing argument for my cases. You honestly get no sleep doing either career its supper long hours and it’s not easy work at alli Determination takes a big roll if you don’t have your heart and soul into it than your probably not going to be able to pursue these careers. I have always looked up to my cousin’s because one of them is a lawyer and another one is a surgeon growing up around them and watching them do the things they do just made me take an interest in their life styles.

Also I‘m not going to lie Greys Anatomy also had a huge part of why I wanted to become a surgeon I know it’s not really like that in real life but the way they impacted others’ lives just made me want to pursue this career. Where as being a lawyer come mostly from Sophia my cousin she’s in law school right now and I visited the law firm where she interns it’s kind of boring but honestly people thing that lawyers are sharks yes that is true but at the same time its nit there are many different types of lawyers and they also have a big impact in people’s lives just want to help people and make a difference in other people‘s lives such as, if I was to become a lawyer I could put the man away that murdered someone’s daughter or wife. Verses where if I was to become a surgeon I saved someone‘s life after they got in to a horrendous wreck or a tragic accident or even cured someone’s cancer Another obstacle that I may face when trying to achieve this goal are getting hired in a place that is close to home or even getting hired in the first place.

The solutions to these obstacles are making good impressions as well as studying my but off and making amazing grades also being very hardworking and determined. If I cannot find a job that is close to where I live I am actually willing to move. But I would prefer to stay close to hom I could just leave my house early and take the super long drive to my job as well. My purpose is helping people and making a huge or even a minor impact on their lives. All of my goals connect to achieving my purpose, each of my goals are steps towards achieving my purpose and I believe that is a sign that your goals are building you up not tearing you down. Moving out of my parent‘s house, graduating from UCF with a bachelor’s degree in criminal law, going to med school, and becoming a lawyer and or a surgeon.

These are all important steps in my life that are part of me achieving my purpose and becoming my own person. Nelson Mandela states, “Education is the most powerful weapon witch you can change the world” I believe this quote describes how Valencia is helping me because through it all I will be attending courses here and learning new things from outstanding professors that will really affect me and my future. Witch I believe makes a difference in how I will proceed with my life, which is changing my world and my experiences. For example, before I attended Valencia college I didn’t even consider attending UCF but then I realized that it was a great school, they have a good law program and medical program as well also they are close to home. These are things that are important to me because it is so close to home I will be able to save money by living off campus and that will help me get closer to being on my own as well as getting a good education.
