Hi everyone! My name is Jaimi Murphy and I am from Andersonville, Tennessee which is just about twenty miles north of Knoxville. I went to Anderson County High School and graduated in May of 2018. During my Junior and Senior year, I was able to attend a program called Middle College. This program allowed me to be a full-time student at Roane State Community College at the age of sixteen. I was able to obtain my Associates degree in science just a few weeks before I received my High School degree! In my free time, I enjoy going on hikes, (specifically to waterfalls!) boating on the lake, baking, and walking my dog at the Songbird trail below Norris Dam near my house! One day, I would like to be able to go to Alaska.
I have dreamed of going to Alaska since I was little and I believe it is one of the most beautiful places. I would also love to go Ireland one day and experience all it has to offer.
My ultimate goal in life is to be genuinely happy with my life in all aspects and to make some sort of positive change- whether it be just in someone’s life or something even bigger.
Here at ETSU, I am an Elementary Education major (k-5th) with a Special Education minor (non-licensure). Hopefully, I will be able to get a dual teaching certificate for Special Education after graduating. That way, I’ll be able to teach something I love all the way from kindergarten to twelfth grade! I would love to teach a younger grade one day, such as Kindergarten or First.
I believe that you have more creative freedom when teaching younger children since testing has not been pushed onto them as much as higher grades. I am unsure at the moment if I want to continue my education directly after graduating, but I know that someday I would like to obtain my Master’s Degree.
Throughout this course, I hope to increase my knowledge in all aspects as well as preparing myself for my future career. I would love to learn more about the ins and outs of teaching and what it takes to become the best teacher I can be. My favorite teacher was my British Literature teacher, Mrs. Bouldin, my Sophomore year of college. She is an incredible teacher that makes sure she caters to each individual’s needs since everyone learns differently. She made learning fun for me and my peers by engaging us in the material in a new and interesting way. I never felt bored in her class, and I was always excited to learn more about British Literature! The amount of dedication and compassion she has for her students is astonishing. I hope that one day I am able to be as great of a teacher as her. I believe Mrs. Bouldin is a perfect example of an intentional teacher.
Theory and Practice extensively explains all aspects of an Intentional teacher. An intentional teacher is essentially one that realizes the differences between students and teaches them accordingly with specific goals for each student in mind. They are teachers who are continuously working to better their students and gives everything a purpose. ‘Intentional teachers will constantly think about the outcomes they want for their students and about how each decision they make moves children towards those outcomes'(Salvin, 2018, 4). This represents how intentional teachers always have the end goal and their student’s progression in mind. ‘Intentional teachers assess student learning in ways that align with both their goals and their instruction… Intentional teachers know that no one measure is ideal for every circumstance, and they [intentional teachers] implement a range of assessments that fit their purposes and circumstances’ (Salvin, 2018, 440). This demonstrates that intentional teachers take the time and effort to cater to each individual student’s needs. They know what each student needs to be successful in their academic career and they strive to make that a reality. These teachers are dedicated to their career and helping their students succeed.
