The word “Courage” possesses many meanings to many different people. “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” Winston Churchill had said. It’s something everyone has in them, at one point in their lives. Someone that has Courage; compassion and understanding is considered a hero to me. My dad David exemplifies all of these traits. He has been through a lot in the past fifty-three years of his life.
He’s been there for all of us even when times were rough. He has taught me to be the person I am today, how to love and provide for my own children even when times get rough. He is caring; and compassionate to everyone he knows and comes across. David served in the Marines for many years until he was discharged for medical reasons. Till this day he suffers from several things including back pains; but that doesn’t stop him from his everyday duties.
He pushes through each day knowing that he is providing for his family. David is courageous for what he went through during a family vacation to Colorado. During that vacation he suffered a bleeding ulcer that ruptured, due to that it almost took his life. David underwent emergency surgery to remove that ulcer and stop the bleeding. He overcame it and survived with minimal chances. Since then he has been in and out of the hospital with many scares, with fear that it may return one day.
David is courageous for all he goes through, every doctor’s appointment is knots to his stomach not knowing if that will be the day they say it has returned.
David has had many thresholds he has overcome. David has become a strong willed person, after serving in the military and with his fight with cancer. He went through so much pain with this cancer; and is proud to say he is a cancer survivor. By fighting through cancer and pushing on he crossed over a threshold. David has showed his courageousness and strength by believing and having faith that the cancer wouldn’t come back. He stuck it out for his family no matter how crazy it would get at times. That is what I define a hero and courage as.
