Karin Nohrs debut novel “Lord Merse breaks” is more oppressive as the story progresses. At first, we still believe to be entertained simply amusing. Mr. Merse is presented as a strange fellow – a true bummer, unworldly washcloth, the mother’s hand-knitted colorful socks and cough drops in the luggage has to wear while beach walk peculiar place swimsuit boxer shorts ( “hunter green with mallards on it” and buy-wife ex Dagmar nor his) and since childhood fear has swim at low tide to go.

Can he swim free?

He is and remains – to anticipate the same – a poor, pitiful sausages. He has summer holidays. As a music teacher, he must of course with God and the world to holiday together, and he perceives as one of the major handicaps of his life.

If this were only everything, then we could look relaxed forward and forward to a Holiday reading inject à la vacation with Mr. Merse. But the author Karin Nohr, studied psychology, leads us to the 41-year-old Ingo Merse, born Swan, a man before, who has since his infancy had no chance of its own development, could never emancipate and ultimately fails across the board. Not even the narrator is generous with it: Unlike his fellow or opponents he runs continuously only as “Mr. Merse”

According to everyone’s taste, this book is not likely;.

the dreary mood, and the sometimes lengthy interior monologues not only pollute Mr. Merse, but also our readers over time.

For the past three years, Mr. Merse is divorced. Its small, compact ex-wife Dagmar (flautist) had always determined in their unpleasant barker-type, which have to do Mr. Merse (horn) and let. They had created a supposed “high security cocoon,” in which he had dropped. but one day found Dagmar that chemistry not agree. “Two wind that could not go well with us,” she said. Now she lives with a man ten years younger together.

Since Mr. Merse fell into a black hole, brought residential treatments behind. Now give him his psychiatric morning the necessary thrust, and in the evening they let him wegdämmern in dreamless artificial sleep.

With new intentions and plans Mr. Merse starts his well-deserved vacation. He wants tapering off his medication, jog, swim, read-intensive, cook yourself, comfortably chatting with people on the beach, practicing primarily on his horn. All this on Sylt in the apartment of his older sister Barbara. When they were children, they always had to take care of little brother Ingo. If they played school, he was still trying to fight back. But their punishment with a ruler and unredeemed promises ( “You can then Häsli get [a fur doll].”) Made him a hypocrite. Now Barbara principal of a high school and a know-it-Richter is married. The apartment she leaves him generously for low season price, “because you’re just ‘ne cricket and nothing did.”

Unfortunately, smash musical plans. The Brahms Horn Trio enters nor to perfection as the English horn solo from Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” because the neighboring apartment a gentleman pulls a suffering from “vegetative dystonia”; the couple asks for calm. Moreover, Mr Merse checked his well-being daily reduced little by little the tablet dose. Alone with his thoughts world, he dives into the Johannes Brahms biography “encounter with the people.” The great master as Mr Merse worked for a time in Detmold. How that would have been, both had the same time as a student at the Academy of Music … sure they would have been friends.

In addition to a Crime Lord Merse only heavy stuff in the luggage. Robert Musil’s great novel “The Man Without Qualities” Dagmar had left him in the separation ( “Fits you better”). Daily leaves Mr. Merse chance decide: read small essays, they take up as an oracle, as messages of the day – or to talk with Musil’s protagonist Ulrich, whom he feels close

From his self-doubt can Mr. Merse not free. Permanent he questioned his actions, listening to Dagmar’s stupid comments ( “with your Getröte”). Time he confesses positive properties – “diligent, cautious, loyal, true” – then again he quarrels with its essence: “.. Taciturn, slow, bland He dackelte behind the events here”

But what is then developed, is an intelligent, intellectual psychological portrait of a deeply locked and devastated soul. The inner monologues and dialogues that Mr. Merse with his imaginary interlocutors Johannes and Ulrich points out, reveal a man who longs for love and recognition, but out of sheer fear of failure his life will never be able to master. A little hope glimmers on when he meets Anne Marie Luner, the single mother of two children. May be able to bring him luck and support? But no. This episode turns out to be iridescent soap bubble, blue sky on Sylt will burst fast.
