Interplay the Process of Interpersonal Communication

In the textbook, self-concept is defining the relatively stable set of perception you hold of yourself.  It is an idea of the self-constructed from the beliefs one holds about oneself and the responses of others. The four images that are in my coat of arms represent who I am as a unique individual and they identify me through the following ways: culture, gender, reflected appraisal, and social comparison. A person’s, self-concept making up of many ideas and perceptions that define the person.

Culture is defined as “the language, values, beliefs, traditions, and customs people share and learn.”

I chose Christianity as my culture that I identify with. Christianity is a religion that is based on the person and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, or its beliefs and practices. Religion is defined as the belief in and worship of superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. I picked the symbol of the holy bible to represent my Christianity because this book is where I learn the word of God.

It lets us have a relationship between God and us as humans. The bible is a collection of sacred texts or scriptures that Christians follow. I have been a Christian my whole life and I identify as a Christian because I believe that God made the world and that human beings are created in God’s image. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again.

I have been going to church all my life and have been becoming more involved in my church.

It is a big part of who I am and always will be. Gender is referred to as the social and psychological dimensions of masculine and feminine behavior.  The gender that I identify as is female. Female is defined as of, relating, or being the sex that typically can bear young or produce eggs.  I identify as a female because it was determined when I was still being fertilized and the doctors determine the combo of chromosomes which was XX meaning female. I have physical and feminine characteristics that associate me to be a female. I chose the female sex symbol which is a circle with a small cross underneath. A gender symbol is defined as a pictogram or glyph used to represent biological sex and gender in biology or medicine, in genealogy, or the sociological fields of gender politics, LGBT subculture, and identity politics.

Gender identity is the personal sense of one’s gender. Gender identity can correlate with a person’s assigned sex at birth or can differ from it. My gender identity is female which is why I chose to put the female sex symbol in my coat of arms to represent my gender. Reflected Appraisals is a mirroring of other judgments I chose a positive reflected appraisal where my parents and grandparents would always say how hard of a worker I am. I picked this because when I have heard this positive appraisal my whole life from them it has impacted me personally to be a better person and to always do my best. Hearing this makes me want to even work harder to show them that I am a hard worker. Even when sometimes I might not be working that hard or do not feel like I am a hard worker my family is always there to support me. They encourage me to never give up and make sure I know that I am an extremely hard worker.

I chose to draw a hard-working student because all through the years I have been in school, I have had to work harder than most students. My family has always been by my side and there to help me if I need it. They have been a huge impact on me and made me feel like I can do anything and that I am smarter than I think I am. It is extremely rewarding when you know you have put everything you got into your work and that you have tried your absolute best. “Evaluating ourselves in comparison,” is the definition for social comparison. I know that there are probably lots of examples of where I compare myself to others. Social media has a big impact on social comparison for me. Social media is the term that describes all the communication channels that allow community-based input, interaction, content sharing, and collaboration.

I will see things that I wish I had or want to be like. The social comparison that I identify with is knowing that I am shy and wishing that I were like everyone else that is not. Shyness is defined as is a sense of awkwardness or apprehension that some people consistently feel when approaching or being approached by others. I chose to be shy because I have been like this my entire life and it is defiantly part of who I am. I have always wished I would be more outgoing or be able to talk to large groups of people without feeling scared. The picture that is in my coat of arms is a shy emoji where the face is covering its eyes. Emoji is defined as ideograms and smileys used in electronic messages and web pages. They are small digital images or icon used to express an idea, emotion, etc. Since I picked being shy to identify social comparison, I thought that the shy emoji shows the shyness of me personally.

When you are shy a lot of times you do not want to talk or even be noticed at times which the emoji represents the hiding of the face so you feel like no one is looking at you. A person’s self-concept is made up of many ideas and perceptions that define the person. Christianity, female, hardworking, and shyness are what I chose to identify myself in the following four ways: culture, gender, reflected appraisal, and social comparison. The Bible, female gender symbol, hardworking student, and a shy emoji face pictures in the four quadrants of my coat of arms make up my self-concept and represent who I am as a unique individual. Self-concept reflects the aspects of who you are, and everyone has their own different and unique self-concept of themselves. To be aware of oneself is to have a concept of oneself.
