Is Equal Opportunity Achievable for Everyone?

Equality opportunity is defined as the idea that people ought to be able to have equal terms, or on a “level playing field.” Equality of Opportunity consists of three types of policies that are significant to opportunity. The policies consist of education policies, health policies, and housing policies.

Education policies are the principles and government policymaking in the educational division as well as the collection of laws and rules that govern the operations of the education systems. Education occurs in many forms for many purposes through many institutions from early childhood education to twelve grades as well as two and four-year colleges, universities, and job training.

Education policy can affect people of all ages. Within the United States, the education policy has been important since the first settlement. The goal of the education policy has evolved in the United States as society and culture have changed.

Handled by the federal government the United States Public Health Service has existed since seventeen-ninety-eight headed by the U.

S Surgeon General. The National Institutes of Health handle biomedical research and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention monitor outbreaks of disease and implements prevention measures. Currently, we are all more than familiar with the CDC due to our united enemy, “Covid-19”. Health policies refer to decisions, plans, and actions that are undertaken to achieve specific health care goals within a society. The importance of healthcare policy is that it sets a general plan of action used to guide desired outcomes and is a guideline to help make decisions. As I mentioned earlier, we are now more than ever familiar with the CDC, without the CDC Americans would not have an understanding or knowledge of the Covid-19 virus. Healthcare policy is vital to everyday life.

Another vital policy is the housing policy. Housing policy allows access to quality, affordable housing and provides stability to individuals and families. Without housing policies, the homeless rate would be significantly overwhelming more than it already is. With housing policy, the elderly can get assistance through Social Security and Medicare reducing poverty among them. The Middle and upper class also gain assistance from the housing policy, middle-class benefits from the “shadow welfare state” of tax expenditures which includes a tax deduction. Lastly, the working poor is just living above the poverty line. The working poor benefit from three programs ACA, EITC, and SNAP. Without the housing policy, many Americans would struggle to have a roof over their heads.

Equality of opportunity under the Trump administration has faced many cutbacks as he has proposed massive cuts to federal affordable housing programs, as well as other essential programs that ensure the basic standards for low-income Americans. The education policy has been slashed by the Obama-era regulations for for-profit colleges, including a rule that forced these schools to prove they provide gainful employment to graduates. The Affordable Care Act has weakened immensely since President Trump has been in office in addition to President Trump attempting to repeal Obamacare. Equality of opportunity, and chances for advancement should be open to everybody interested to have an equal opportunity to compete in this world.
