Equal Rights And Opportunities in The Country

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” King’s dream was about the hope that someday every nation: black and white, would have equal rights and opportunities in a great country as America is. He hoped that everybody regardless their race and skin color would pursue freedom and happiness. Lincoln fought to liberate black nation.

King’s hope was that Lincoln’s fight would become reality and black people would be granted all the blessings that the Constitution promised them not just through paper and pen. America is a great country and it has accomplished King’s dream in great part. Great changes have happened for the good of black people since King had his “I have a dream” speech. Indeed, many more years will pass and many changes will occur before future societies will agree that no race or nation is less and everyone feels equal in America and in the whole world.

King’s dream will become a reality after each society and person reach conscious awareness and admit that no race is supreme over another. In his speech King cites the horrible injustices and inhumanities black people have been experiencing for 300 years: “We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.” “We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating: “For Whites Only.

” “Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.” “We can never be satisfied as long as…” is a very powerful phrase by which he unveils the oppression and horror towards innocent Negros. American society has made significant progress towards fulfilling King’s dreams in many ways.

America has changed beyond recognition in the past 50 years. Under Jim Crow laws black people were deprived of the most basic human right of voting. In the Cotton South under Jim Crow law black people were lynched if they tried to vote. Black students had to go to separate schools. Schools were segregated for black and white students by law. Buildings and textbooks for black students were used and old. Black people only could have low paying jobs: women were mostly domestic servants and men worked in fields or farms.

Now, African Americans are elected or appointed as the U.S. government officials. Barack Obama was the first African American president, Patrick Deval was the first African American governor of Massachusetts. 50 years ago, laws prohibited marriages between whites and blacks and people. If a white person married a black person this would be considered a crime and the couple would be jailed. Today, interracial marriage in the United States id fully legal. 2015, around 25% of newly married black men intermarry. Half a century ago segregation was the law and the norm in the South and in The North. Today, segregation between black and white people is declining in America’s big cities and so do ‘all-white’ neighbourhoods. Today, there are around 50 black members in the U.S. House of representatives. African Americans earn more money now than they used to make 50 years ago.

In comparison to white people’s earnings black people also get paid equally for the same occupation. America has made King’s dream come true in many ways. King was requiring voting rights and equal opportunities for African Americans. His demands about racial segregation and discrimination are now satisfied. Jim Crow laws denied African-Americans their most basic citizen right to vote. Now they have the legal right to vote. Under Jim Crow laws as of 1954, most schools were constitutionally separate for black and white students. In our days United States no longer has

legal racially segregated schools. Black men mainly worked in the fields or farms and black women were domestic servants. The number of African-American college graduates is growing and now they hold well-paying jobs. America had an African-American president. Whereas around 50 years ago blacks were not even allowed the right to vote. America has progressed immensely since King’s times. Since King’s journey no one could ever envision the remarkable changes for the good of African-American people.  There is no doubt that great changes made part of King’s dream come true. However, effort still will be needed to fully erase the forms of traces of racial bias embedded in the unconscious minds of society and the world. America and the whole world have become more tolerant and ready to solve issues regarding race throughout the world. Skin color is nothing like the big issue it used to be. But the “pursuit of happiness” is never easy and can never end.
