In proverbs, we see how there are many wise sayings that have to do with daily life, and life struggles that we have be going on in our life. This species is about envy and jealousy and why it’s bad to have that in our lives. Another thing is how envy and jealousy can affect how we interact with people. Another big thing is how we treat other people whether its kind or unkind. Proverbs 23:17-18(ESV) says “Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day.
Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off. Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way.” This proverb is talking about how we should not be jealous or want the things nonchristian have.
Because in the end none of what they have will matter. We have something so much better coming for us in heaven.
Another verse that is part of this is James 3:14-16 “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”… this is talking about how if we have selfish ambitions and jealousy in our heart but we should not try to look good in front of others and try to seem better than them when we know we are struggling ourselves. If we are Christians and have struggles and people see it, and we try to hide it we are not glorifying God because like it said in these verses if we don’t try to change jealousy can drive us to do evil things.
Even to the point of hurting a person because they have something we want.
Another big thing is that God says that jealousy, selfish ambitions, those things are not from him but of the earth. This verse backs up one of the statements I made about how it can drive people to do bad things “For jealousy makes a man furious, and he will not spare when he takes revenge”. Proverbs 24:1 ESV says “Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them,”. There will be times in our lives where we have friends who are not Christian, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing we can help those people and be a testimony to them and share the gospel. We just have to be careful that they don’t influence us in a bad way and lead us away from Christ. We often get jealous of the things our friends have and forget to be thankful for the things that God has given us.
Neel Burton put this in a really good way he said “ jealousy usually is because someone does something better than them and they wish they had that quality or they wish that person would lack that quality”. I agree with what he said that’s the main reason for a person to get jealous. The solution for this problem is to work on ourselves as a person and try to fix that about ourselves. We have to learn to be thankful for what God gave us and the abilities that God gave us because we are great just the way God created us. Of course, as humans we are sinners and we have to change things about ourselves to become better Christians to glorify God.
Even if you are not Christian to just work on yourself as a person to be more kind and thankful for what you have. “Contentment celebrates grace. The contented heart is satisfied with the Giver and is therefore freed from craving the next gift” . We simply have to learn to be happy with what we have and enjoy and make the best out of what we have even if others have better things. We have to be thankful for what we do have and if we have God in our hearts what better thing than that, having Jesus in our heart is the best thing ever it’s better than all the riches on the earth.
