Understanding D Day

What was D Day, D Day was a very unfortunate event that happened on June 6, 1944 where thousands died on the beaches of Normandy. Although there is not an exact number of how many died but it is believed to be between 4 and 9 thousand men. This terrible event was a battle in World War two.

The 5 beaches of Normandy had nicknames they were Utagh, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.and the nickname for the entire invasion, D Day was Operation Overlord. The Germans new at some point we would do an invasion but they did not know where.

So we tried to drive their attention the other way so we could be more successful.

Also so they didn’t send in more troops to the beaches of Normandy because then we would suffer more casualties and with how many we knew we would have, losing another 4 or 9 thousand was not an option. We were setting up Operation Overload for a long time since 1942 the americans were pressing the British to set up this attack they finally agreed and then the planning started.

The Industrial World of D Day

So, as World War two was happening it started this enormous industrial revolution building more planes, tanks, jeeps, boats, and creating new planes, tanks, jeeps, and boats. Even taking a normal sherman tank and putting a new little gadget to make it more safe or more dangerous for the enemy maybe even just to turn a tank into an amphibious vehicle.

Anyone would be amazed to hear about some of the most simple ideas are some of the main gadgets that give us a second chance at life.

Some Interesting About D Day

The mg 42 weighs 24 pounds with a bipod attached. That’s heavy considering most rifles weigh around seven and nine pounds. A lot of people ask, so what does D Day mean? Well there are multiple names and meanings but the two main and most popular are either Designated Day, or even Deliverance Day. it’s a myth that the D in D Day meant Death Day from how many died.

Roughly 200,000 german troops were killed or wounded. Their were about 83,000 British and Canadian troops that were either killed or wounded. About 125,847 Americans were killed or wounded that day. It was such a sad, terrible event but it needed to happen.

To trick the germans before D Day America had ton of inflatable tanks all over the country this would make the germans think that we had a lot more troops and tanks or vehicles in general. We did this with fake planes even entire fake blow up airports and hangers but they didn’t know that they were fake.(IWM.org)

The Invasion

The amphibious invasion started on D Day at six thirty AM so it all came down to this once the boat ramp goes down they were told to just jump off the side because the world famous mg42 was taking care of all of the front rows in the boat. So they all started jumping off the boats side. Unfortunately a lot of the men were not strong enough or just not good swimmers so they were slowly killed by their equipment from to much weight so even if they were swimming their weight would just drag them down to the bottom to eventually float ashore. For the ones that were lucky enough to survive just that part they still had at least 200 yards to sprint before finding any cover to return the fire. It made it hard to sprint this 200 yards with one hundred plus pounds on their backs and as they were dodging bullets from machine guns, chain guns, or most well known the mg 42 which would shoot 125 shots per minute! That’s crazy! This gun was so fast you physically could not hear individual shots. Then the Navy came in and that’s the big turning point for this entire invasion. The Navy had took out most the Germans with their enormous cannon then the we could go in and liberate the beaches.(IMW.org)
