Black Americans Comparison to Northern Dubliners

In the world where oppression has happened in many cultures the focus that will be looked at is the oppression of American blacks and Ireland Dubliners. Dubliners where the northern people of Dublin and where treat similar to the blacks of America. Dubliners where oppressed not only by their own people, British rule, and Catholic Church. The biggest difference between black American and Dubliners is that Dubliners held a social status of lower to middle class citizens of Ireland. Where black Americans where not seen as citizens but as property of the white men.

This is the difference I see between the two cultures. Black Americans suffered through a harsh oppression that white men had created. They were expected to work for their owners and not seen as human beings. White men treat them as animals and bred the women to create strong children for future crop production. Blacks not allowed an education and where to be seen as retarded or not smart.

They worked for no money only food. Black Americans went through physical, psychological, economical oppression.

For many years the black Americans fought for their right to be people and be free to walk among white men as equal. Paul Eisenhauer states how southern whites during slavery portray blacks as savages to justify the owning of black Americans and harsh treatment that they put the black through. The ending of slavery didn’t end Black American oppression they were treat as second hand citizens and segregated from the white people.

Jobs for blacks didn’t pay well and housing was horrible. They were stuck in social status of poverty for a very long time until activists worked hard to create a more equal society and chance of advancement in the social classes, which can be comparable to the Dubliners. Ireland had been occupied by British for a long time. It was a civilization that was looked down on by British people and was under economic hardships. British government claimed that Irish people lacked education and economic stability. In Dubliners by James Joyce that Dubliners faced struggles of financial hardship, foreign political dominance, hatred from other Irish nationalist groups, and influence of the Irish Catholic Church.

Theses struggles made it hard for Dubliners to show self-expression and freedom. The southern Dubliners where part of the high middle class and upper class and didn’t face the same kind of struggles as the north Dubliners. Dublin was originally made up of Catholic, Protestant, Jews and Quakers. The Hood of Dublin were known to be one the worst places of the United Kingdom. Northern Dubliners did everything they could to hold on to culture and feel as if they weren’t part of lower class. Joyce in his stories really highlights how the Dubliners life was like a machine and very boring and how there was not much excitement. Dubliners where very scared to modernize because of the fear of British government and economic issues. The stories portrayed of Dublin are never ending in a happy story but rather with tragic and different endings then most would expect. One Might wonder how these Dubliners of Ireland and Blacks of American faced a similar Oppression. As one might see there is a since of being stuck for Dubliners and Black Americans in the society that they a part of. They faced similar oppression, treated as if they were nothing to the people around and as if the work they did wasn’t enough.

They were more of a machine then a human being, with the same routine day in and day out. With little to no way of climbing the social status, both escaped this depression through literature and music because it gave them a voice that not one person could hear or read, but the whole group understood what it symbolized. I would have to agree with the Commitment that Northern Dubliners where the blacks of Ireland. The Dubliners and Blacks similar oppressions from economic, class, work, unable to advance, and more. The oppression both groups faced show that “The Commitment” definitely has a point to compare Dubliners to American Blacks. The way that music and literature helped both groups overcome these oppression they were facing by having their own voice only there people understood. Oppression has happen too many races and cultures throughout growth of the world.
