Piggy: Most Deserving Survivor?

In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, I believe Piggy is the character most deserving to be rescued at this point in the story. He is the most intelligent, patient, and the most rational on the island and there are plenty of reasons that show he should be rescued. For example, the author wrote in chapter four, “He was the only boy on the island whose hair never seemed to grow. The rest were shock-headed, but Piggy’s hair still lay in wisps over his head as though baldness were his natural state, and this imperfect covering would soon go, like the velvet on a young stags antlers” (64).

This description shows how Piggy stays civilized and clean compared to the other boys whose hair was growing out and whose personalities were changing. Some of the others, like Jack, for example, were quickly losing it and giving in to the savage life on the island. Along with Piggy, Ralph also tries his hardest to stay civilized and focus on being rescued.

Likewise, Piggy said, “We got a lot of sticks. We could have a sundial each. Then we should know what the time was.” “A fat lot of good that would be.” stated one of the boys. Piggy then went on to say, “You said you wanted things done. So we could get be rescued” (65). Piggy has tried over and over, and came up with many ideas just to get them rescued. His intelligence is shown when he gives to use the conch and build the huts.

But many times the boys don’t listen to these ideas. When he brought up the sundial idea, the boys answered sarcastically and ignore him. This shows his patients and also his will to be rescued. To me Piggy sticks right out when I think of who most deserves to be rescued all because of his hard work and contribution to keep the island civilized.
