Symbolic Fight in Animal Farm

In the novel Animal Form by George Orwell the pigs, who are the leaders of the farm, fight valiantly to overthrow their owner, Mr. Jones, and succeed, but in the end, they become power-hungry tyrants like Mr Jones before them, as a result of having been corrupted entirely by power. Power is healthy in moderation, but not in excess. A government cannot accomplish anything without having the appropriate amount of power to execute important tasks, As the Federal Government of the United States soon found out, with not a sufficient amount of power in the hands of the president and Congress, nothing much can be done.

Then again, too much power in the hands of one person or a small group of people can lead to disaster and chaos, that is why our American government has three branches. Lord Acton says: “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

He believes that power in general is bad, but the truth is that power in moderation is good and is needed for a successful government or society, in the case of the animal farm, The owner of the animal farm, Mr, Jones is exceedingly careless about the well-being and health of his animals, as is he negligent in maintaining his farm His heavy drinking and laziness contributes greatly to the lack of care he has both for his animals, and for his farm “mthe fields were full of weeds, the buildings wanted roofing, the hedges were neglected, and the animals were underfedeL Jones went into Willington and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back till midday on Sunday…

When evening came, the animals were still underfed.

Jones acts enormously irresponsible and is failing miserably in taking good care of his animals What he doesn’t realize is that the animals do not take his neglect and irresponsibility lightly at all, in fact they have been plotting and scheming against him for a days. The animals are extremely dissatisfied with the quality of life on the farm and are planning to overthrow Jones and all of the humans on the farm. They want to lead a new, better life that is more organized and free of human influence. Old Major, the head pig at the time, is encouraging all of the animals to stand up for themselves and fight for their independence and freedom from, not only Jones, but all humans, He gives an inspiring speech to all of his fellow animals urging them to rebel. “Is it not crystal clear, comrades, that all of the evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings? Only get rid of Man, and the produce of our labour would be our own.

Almost overnight we could become rich and free. What then must we do? Why, work night and day, heart and soul, for the overthrow of the human race! It is a noble cause, but problems soon arise, for a communist model of government is almost always only effective in theory When Jones is eventually overthrown, the pigs, considered to be the smartest of all of the animals, assume positions as leaders of the animal farm They make good leaders in the beginning, but because none of the other animals are confident enough to stand up against the pigs, to check their power so that it does not get out of hand, they soon seize control over the farm. Most all of the animals are too dumb and meek to question the authority of the pigs and they soon amass an uncontrollable amount of power, and the farm falls into chaos and disorder.
