The Spread of Islam and the Rise of Islamic Art and Culture

The rise of the Islamic culture and religion after Muhammad’s death in 632 CE spread farther and faster than any other before it; even Christianity couldn’t match the spread of Islam. People flocked to Islam for many good reasons though, including their standards of learning to read and write, as well as the beautiful art and architecture exhibited throughout the lands of the Islamic World. One important building created in Jerusalem is the Dome ofthe Rock, The great Islamic building is unusual, with an actual rock serving as the base For many years, this beautiful and historic building was fought over by Muslims, Christians, and Jews alike for the rights to claim it However, the building is not a mosque like many think, but rather an architectural tribute to the triumph of Islam.

It is a marker for the coming of the new religion into the land usually known for housing only Jews and Christians Minarets are an important part to mosques, and no minarets is more important than the one at Samarrat This minaret stands three stories tall next to the Great Mosque at Samarra, Iraq It spirals around to the top, which was too tall for this specific minaret to be used to call Muslims to prayer, however It was probably used to announce the presence of Islam in the Tigris Valley.

At the core of the Islamic world, in Isfahan, Iran, successive dynasties have erected a series of mosques. The first mosque built was the Friday Mosque by the Abbasids during the eighth century.

In the late 11m century, the sultan Malik Shah [transformed the Abbasids’ hypostyle structure into a mosque with a large, open courtyard. Four iwans open into this courtyard It is unclear whether or not this mosque was the first example of using four iwans in the structure, but it has become a standard for Iranian architecture, The most well-known example of Islamic art from any culture is none other than the Taj Mahal, The incredible use of geometry exemplified in this building identifies it as extremely Islamic, with no other culture relying on geometry in their buildings as profoundly as this, Pictures of flowers and calligraphy that adorn the structure are also a very Islamic way of decorating But what identifies this structure as Islamic the most is the “air of Paradise” that surrounds it. As soon as you look at the Taj Mahal, you can clearly see the divine tranquility radiating from it. The air around the Taj is almost like delicate, god-given perfection It is an unmissable feature in Islamic art that is so desirable to all cultures, but nearly unattainable to all but the Islamic architects
