Gay Adoption: Yes or No?

Topics: Gay Adoption

Gay adoption consists of a child or multiple children being chosen to live with a couple of the same sex. Most countries do not allow same-sex couples to adopt children.

In the United State, the same-sex adoption laws vary. Although most states do allow same-sex adoption, some states ban this form of adoption. For example, Florida strictly prohibits all homosexuals from adopting. The main issue is whether or not homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt children.

The main concern that occurs with this issue is whether or not same-sex couples should be allowed to have the option to adopt children. Some people believe that homosexuals should be allowed the same rights as heterosexuals. They argue that same-sex adoptions are beneficial because the number of homeless children in need of a caring and loving family is overwhelming.

Homosexual couples are just as capable as heterosexual couples of providing children with a safe and stable home. However, people are against this issue, arguing that same-sex couplesise incompetent of providing traditional customs in the household.

They also believe that it would not be fair to the child/children and therefore they would suffer.

The court system in Germany fortified same-sex adoption rights. The German Federal Constitutional Court ruled that a person who is in a civil partnership should have the right to adopt his/her partner’s stepchild/adopted child. Before this advancement, a person was only able to adapt to his/her partner’s biological child. This means that in Germany, adoption is not limited to a partnership’s sexuality.

One can adopt a child regardless of whether that person is homosexual or heterosexual. In Germany, they believe that it is more important to focus on the best possible home placement of a child rather than focusing on the structure of the household.

On the other hand in the U.S, Virginia is one of the two states that aallowfor private adoption agencies to turn away potential adopting couples due to their sexual orientation or religious and moral beliefs. They believe allowing this to occur would add a “conscience clause” to adoption agencies, helping them in deciding which families are “suitable” for adoption.

I believe that anyone should be able to adopt a child regardless of his/her sexual orientation, moral values, or religion. When it comes to finding a home for a child, one should not consider these characteristics. Instead, one should look into the person’s mental health or conduct a criminal background check. When a child is deprived loving family and home, he/she would not refuse the home of a same-sex couple. The only thing that should be of importance is the values of the family and their ability to provide for the child. Overall, I feel as though same-sex couples should be allowed the same rights as heterosexual couples in adoption.
