Black feminist thought expresses Black women’s arising capability as instruments of awareness. Whereas the effects of gender and racial prejudice become perceived as a double strain, a vibrant and generally recognized rational attitude has remained uncovered by African American women. Black feminist thought, Patricia Hill Collins’, explores precise views and statements originated by Black feminist authors and thinkers, concentrating on the connections of knowledge, private and visible to the academy. Black feminist academically is not a developed concept like other traditional thoughts that have been tested over the time across different spectrums.
The reason black feminist thought is not the same as other traditions thoughts is the sources black feminist thought comes from.
Black feminism thought is developed through individual black women or collective black women experience with race and gender. They share their experience with how the system affects them through different dimensions. Academically, there was a little chance a black woman was represented and misrepresented in a befitting image that can describe the story of a black women.
Starting at the point of slavery where African women was brought to the continent Of North America as slaves, they lost the will to tell their own side of the story. Through slavery, they lost their privacy to live.
They were sexually exploited to the point that they were reduced to a mere breeding tool like cattle for slave owners. Through a century of exploitation, they have lost their right to be them and be someone else. In a culture that was highly heterosexual, they have become lost in a controlled space.
“Black women’s thought especially Black women’s labor market victimization as “mules.” As dehumanized objects, mules are living machines and can be treated as part of the scenery”. (Collins, 51). The dehumanization of black women contributed to the controlling image that black women there to be used and disposed of. They have been tested through time and their emotions preyed upon it.
Amidst the insights extracted from word-of-mouth history, music, and poetry, Collins manifests unique evolution of influence between the Black women being a means of consciousness. With African-American women depicted as self-sufficient and self-defined societies prepared to face class, gender, and racial subjugation, the Afro-centric feminist view attempts to refine the community around the interpretive capacity embodied by consciousness in enabling those oppressed groups. For social reform to transpire, the Black feminist thought recognizes the enrichment of the social alteration of economic and federal organizations, as well as the individuals’ developed awareness – viewed to be the theory’s distinctive characteristic. Overall, Black feminism thought as an individual is very interesting to read and understand from different angles. Black feminist thought was not something I have thought existed in academic wise because our institutions are based on the perspective of the Eurocentric views. I’m taking a political analysis course and one of the topics that made me wonder around was why the African American community is very poor and are of the most marginalized communities in the USA. “The Moynihan Report” (1965) report that come out makers argue that these people choose to be poor rather than focusing on discriminatory institutions that have contributed to the marginalization of black communities across the U.S. Taking this class have shown me a different view of how black women across the U.S shared their struggle through storytelling, poetry, and other forms of expression without relying on institutions that have marginalized them throughout centuries. The interesting part about taking this class was that the registrar department was hesitance to use this class as a theory course.
Teaching future academics and scholars about black feminist though is very critical to the developing and understand not just the struggle of black women but also their contribution to women rights, equality, and womanhood. I have taken women history class before and the operation of black women struggles was never outlined this black feminist course does. I hope in the future, more institutions will offer academics that focus on this topic. There is cultural regarding women history so it’s obvious black women struggle is alien to a lot of scholars and regular people that might have otherwise contributed to this subject. Even though I had no intention of taking this course bit I’m really enjoying it and will use this experience in my other activities inside and outside school.
