Chapter I

Introduction

Background of The Study

The development of transport networks has been a big part of economic growth. Improvement of roads, in particular, benefits people in their way of living. It gives them easy access to health clinics, schools, and other services. However, in some areas of the Philippines, specifically in Sitio Sapang Bato, Sta. Ines Centro, Santa Ignacia, Tarlac, the road is unpaved or in a poor state. For that reason, it is inconvenient for the students to use the roadway, especially when it is raining.

Moreover, the locality’s principal source of income is agriculture. Consequently, supplies are hard to travel for the same reason; hence, road development is essential.

In 2010, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Philippine Office, aimed to obtain a safe and efficient regional road network in 11 provinces of the Philippines by improving national secondary roads which were connected to principal arterial road links, thereby contributing to the advancement of regional industries and the development of the living standards of inhabitants.

In this study, the researchers aimed to do a project design of the road stated. It is beneficial for the progress of the lives of the residents.

Objectives

This study focuses on designing a road with a drainage system in Sitio Sapang Bato, Barangay Sta. Ines Centro where the road is unpaved or in bad condition. It specifically tries to achieve the following objectives:

1. To provide residents mobility or to give them easy access to health care, education, and other services.

2. To estimate the cost of the project.

3. To plan the timeframe of the project construction.

4. To prevent the eroding of soil because of excess water by designing a drainage.

Significance of the study

The improvement of road

Residents. This study is beneficial to people living in Sitio Sapang Bato, Sta. Ines Centro, Santa Ignacia, Tarlac. It will help them have reliable access to neighboring areas and their needs. Hence, creating new opportunities like employment and government services.

Researchers. This study will help students with the same profession to increase their knowledge and gain experience in actual roadway design and construction.

Farmers. Goods and equipment will be easy to transport.

Scope and limitation

The study is focused on the improvement of the existing road in Sitio Sapang Bato, Sta. Ines Centro, Santa Ignacia, Tarlac. The existing road in the area is currently unpaved. It will be developed into an accessible concrete road with drainage system and will only be accessible to neighboring areas like David, San Jose Tarlac, and Padapada, Santa Ignacia Tarlac for the unsaid roads are not connected to the said existing road.Improvement of rural roads.
