The process of communication comes with roadblocks, which are termed as barriers to communication. There are many types of barriers; the physical/environmental barriers, psychological barriers, technological barriers, cultural barriers, organizational barriers, etc. There are three types of physical barriers that prevent individuals from effective communication: Environment, Distance, and Medium. The ideal communication is face-to-face. To facilitate this, companies adopt “open office” plans that substitute cubicles and corner offices for open tables and shared conference rooms. As teams disperse across the globe, email tends to become a top form of communication.
Collaboration tools like Video conferencing, Facetime, Skype etc. continue to improve each year, and as a result, they have become a tremendous asset in organizations. In my situation a good example of physical barrier is making connection with peers and professors. Distance education or online education is a delivery system where the teacher and the student are separated by physical distance and time. This is mitigated by using alternative media resources when students and instructors have difficulties of establishing face-to-face communication.
