IKEA is a Swedish furniture store. The company was found in 1926 by Ingvar Kamprad. He was born in Smaland in Southern Sweden, raised in a farm near a small village of Agunnaryd. IKEA headquarters is located in Leiden, Netherlands with 415 stores worldwide and about 194,000 current employees. The name IKEA derived from Ingvar Kamprad (I.K) and the first letters of his home town and village where he grew up from Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd (E.A). IKEA originally sold pens, wallets, picture frames, table runners, watches, jewelry and nylon stockings.

Furniture was first introduced to the list of products in 1948.

IKEA is a modern furniture and décor store and its product mix consists of ready-to assemble living room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen furniture and indoor and outdoor decorations. Other than furniture and décor, IKEA also has a restaurant and food market inside every store. The restaurant and food market focus on traditional Swedish recipes such as Swedish meatballs, chocolates, spreads and various drinks.

IKEA extends their product line with Swedish foods for hungry shoppers. They also have cheap foods such as a hot dog for .75 cents or a slice of pizza for $1 or a combo for $3.

IKEA does have up and down extensions. IKEA design with the price tag in mind first then develop the product to suit that price. IKEA product developers and designers work directly with suppliers to ensure that creating the low prices starts on the factory floor and using raw materials efficiently and keeping waste to a minimum. For the up, IKEA does have some more premium choices such as a California King size bed, leather finishes on sofas and memory foam mattresses.

IKEA is a company known worldwide as the low cost, modern furniture store. Customers can walk in and feel and test the quality of each product and get ideas on how to place each furniture piece in the showrooms displayed throughout the store. IKEA’s vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people.

IKEA can broaden their breadth by adding more technology compatible items such as unique built in chargers for iPhones and Androids or adding wireless charging in their tables, nightstands or drawers. As technology becomes more and more involved in our daily lives and people like convenience its very helpful to evolve and incorporate new technology to continue to grow the company.

IKEA can add more depth by adding more styles to their product line. Since their products are low costing IKEA can maybe add a more exclusive or premium line to existing lines. For example, more leather furniture and more plushy cushions could help bring in more customers that are looking to pay a little more for comfort and style.

IKEA can also go above and beyond to make custom fabrication work for customers looking for something more if IKEA does not sell a specific item in their already long list of product line. I think this is a great idea because it opens a lot more options for customers that are willing to pay a little extra to get their dream furniture or appliance to add to their home. This can work because IKEA already works directly with their manufactures but making custom one of a kind item might be a little implausible but if the customer is willing to pay for the extra charge, I think it shouldn’t be a problem.

One more great suggestion I can make is companies now really like collaborating. If one company likes another companies vision and products, both companies can come up with a great idea to create a limited-edition collaboration edition. If IKEA were to do a collaboration collection with another big named company, it could really boost their sales and demand can go even higher for their limited-edition collaboration. This is a great way for two companies to market their brand and bring in new customers. The exposure is even greater because customers may not know one company before the collaboration so now with the merge, both companies can benefit from it.
