Good Will Hunting Movie Review

A classic award-winning film, Good Will Hunting, is a story that teaches us multiple life lessons. Good Will Hunting, which was released in 1997, by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck is a heartfelt, inspiring story that plenty of people have a connection with. In the movie, Matt Damon, who plays as Will, is a young twenty-one-year-old from South Boston who works as a janitor at MIT. Little did we know, Will is secretly talented in mathematics.

Although, these talents did not help, as Will’s childhood has driven him to participate in certain actions which later on lands him in jail.

Professor Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard) makes a deal with Will to get him out of jail, but only if he was willing to work with him and attend counseling sessions. Will agreed, but he also felt as if he didn’t need the counseling sessions. Professor Lambeau went through plenty of counselors until he finally found one who was willing to help Will.

This is a film that tells a story about a young man who has the tools to succeed, but unfortunately his past has been stopping him from achieving it. He faces many trials and tribulations, which eventually he overcomes. The film sets such a lighting that differentiates the differences between the characters and their moods. The character’s authentic Boston accents and themes such as being neglected, abused, and fearful are presented this is some of the reasons why the film was so impactful and successful.Good Will Hunting is unique because it makes viewers feel like they’re taking a walk with Will from the beginning to the end of the film.

Sean who ends up being Will’s counselor from the same neighborhood has also experienced the same exact problems as Will. Will’s personality throughout the movie perceived him to be a jerk, immature, emotionally restrictive, and defensive from any help he was receiving. Throughout the film, Will and Sean had gained an unbreakable bond with each other. As the audience, we got to see the vulnerable side of Will that we have never seen before. For example, towards the end of the movie Sean was able to get Will to finally break as he repeatedly said “It’s not your fault.” We were able to feel all the pain that Will has been dragging with him his whole entire life. Sean was not only able to help Will, he was able to help himself.Also in the film, the vulnerable scene with Will and Sean at the lake. Sean was a warry man who has lost the love of his life. Sean is a very raw character that will help Will in the long run. Sean was able to be with the love of his life during her final days. Sean expresses to Will that “you don’t know anything about real love.” Sean tells Will about himself, how immature he was for talking about the painting in his office.

Sean expresses to Will that he “ripped his life apart” when he talks about his wife in a hurtful way. Later on during the scene, Sean asks Will to open up, talk about who Will really is as a person. Sean expresses to Will that he is terrified about what he might say about his childhood or what he has been through and Sean was willing to help.Will uses his charming ways, to grab Skylar’s attention at the bar. Skylar is a medical student at Harvard who eventually dates Will. In the film, we were able to see Will and Skylar’s happy relationship from our point of view. Will has broken up with Skylar due to his insecurities and fears has gotten the best of him.

Skylar was ready to take the next step with Will by moving to California with her while she attends medical school. Skylar’s relationship with Will which will eventually. In the film, Skylar back looking around for Will to see if he was right there behind her as the audience we have expected him to show up but unfortunately Will was nowhere to be found.Will was staring at the planes in the sky as they flew by. As the audience, we have felt the the raw emotion of them. We just wanted to be together one last time. Good Will Hunting is a empowering film because it teaches the audience that being vulnerable is very hard. Many people are afraid of their past or getting hurt again and again. In this film, it helps the audience realize that being vulnerable is a very scary thing which can be difficult to recover from. Also, it teaches the audience when they have given up on themselves it will be too late if you don’t make a instant change.
