William Shakespeare was a very famous English poet, playwright, and actor. One of the famous plays that he wrote was “Hamlet”. Hamlet is a very famous play and many play writers or directors interpret Shakespeare’s play differently. A Great scene to compares is Act5 scene 2. The two films that will be compared are “Hamlet” from 1996 directed by Kenneth Branagh and “Hamlet” from 2009 directed by Gregory Doran. The two different directors took the same play and made it reflect their own interpretation.

The films are very different, but similar in many ways. “Hamlet” from 1996 directed by Kenneth Branagh and “Hamlet” from 2009 directed by Gregory Doran both use the theme guilt. The theme of guilt will be explain through the comparison of how Gertrude is portrayed, Hamlet is portrayed, and the fighting scene.

First “Hamlet” made in 1996 directed by Kenneth Branagh portrayed the more classical time period. The time period in the film was in the 19 century. Hamlet in the film was thought to be mad or insane.

In Act 5 Scene 2 Hamlet is not insane compared to the rest of the film. By Act 5 Hamlet has calmed down a lot. Hamlet has accepted his faint about dying. He does not care if he dies while fighting because death will come eventually. His facial expression is very emotional when talking about death. In this scene he is more humble then insane. Hamlet even talks to Lacerates, he truly seemed sorry for hurting Lacerates. Hamlet is portrayed very genuine in this film

The second film “Hamlet” made in 2009 by Gregory Doran is a more modern version of Hamlet.

… The king cries out for help, but no one helps him. No helped the king, so he just gives up. The king willingly drinks the wine and dies. The king in both films was not guilty for the wrong he did. He had no choice but to die. In both films Hamlet dies at peace. Hamlet and Laetes makes a mend and forgive each other. Also in both films Hamlet tells Horatio not to kill himself. He wanted Horatio to live and tell his story.

In Conclusion, the two different directors took the same play and made it to reflect their own interpretation. The films are very different, but similar in many way. The theme of guilt will be explain through the comparison of how Gertrude is portrayed, Hamlet is portrayed, and the fighting scene. The directors of each play portrayed the characters in unique and different ways Both director did a great job and had very different inerpretations.
