There Should Be No Consequences to Free Speech

“Half of the world is composed of people who have something to say and can’t, and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it.”

This quote above contains a lots of meaning. It tells us something about the freedom of speech too. Every man and woman has the right to say what he or she wants to says. Though, as this quote shows, not everyone can state their opinions or share their thoughts.

In some situations the voice of the people who are shy or not confident enough could easily get lost while other people’s voice might be heard more often and louder.

Let’s just take politicians for example. Their voice can be heard everywhere because of their high position. Famous politicians often speak about things that are not quite true. They overpower the voice of the public, which is always more true than theirs but the public is not always allowed to tell their opinion.

As the quote says, half of the world can say what they want to say and the other half can’t. Another reason why people would not say what they want is simply because they are scared. For example when people see a group of people beating another individual up, the person who saw it will possibly not help the one that is getting beaten up. Why? Because he or she is scared that he will end up the same as the person who is getting a beat.

Unfortunately we are living in a society where your words can only mean something your are a well known person. If you are nothing and nobody your words will not be heard and nobody is going to understand what you are saying. There are also many many people who might possibly get offended by your words. People who are sensitive about feminism, racism or sexism. Today’s society has built up a few barriers that some of might cross sometimes and the consequences are huge. We can easily get called racist or offensive just because we were being fully honest with the other person. Experiences like this might discourage us from telling what is on our mind so we would rather keep things and opinion to ourselves than tell it to other people just to avoid misunderstandings and uneccessary fights. Then there is the other half of the world who keep talking about things that are not really true and do not have any serious meaning behind their words. These people are unfortunately the people who often build these barriers I talked about before.

In conclusion, I believe that each and every one of us should be able to share our thoughts and opinions without having to deal with a million serious consequences that might follow our words. Nobody is perfect, we all know that but sometimes we need someone to point out our mistakes so we can learn from them and become a better person. There is nothing wrong with honesty, just know the limits.
