“Clean Sweep” Article Assignment

Within the contents of Chapter 14, it defines what a report and profile are. A report is a piece of writing that presents factual information to educate the audience in some way. Generally, a report is objective rather than subjective. Profiles provide firsthand accounts of people, places, events, institutions, or other things. A profile’s goal is to be informative, however, it also provides descriptive details (sight, sounds, smells), anecdotes, and dialogue.

The article “Clean Sweep” is labeled a profile rather than a report because of its level of bias and tone, how it presented the topic through descriptive details, and insertion of first-person dialogue.

Throughout the article you can tell the author Ryan Kohls feels sympathy for the employees who clean up the Rogers Centre. “Enter the cleaners—exhausted, poorly paid and largely anonymous” (Kohls 977). The author feels bad for these employees who have to clean up the stadium.

Kohls in a way is trying to make the reader understand that these workers are putting up with some horrible working conditions. A report does not try to convey a level of bias and tries to only present facts. In this case, Kohls is being more biased in his article through the way he is describing the employees that clean the Rogers Centre. The level of tone makes the article feel more like a profile rather than an objective report.

Kohls in his article puts immense descriptive details. The way he structured the presentation of his information for the process of cleaning the Rogers Centre is very vivid.

“In time, the pile turns into a cascading waterfall of miscellaneous trash. Beer soaked hot dogs mix with ketchup-infused popcorn and the ubiquitous shells of sunflower seeds, which are maddeningly hard to persuade off the wet concrete” (Kohls 978). This level of imagery feels more like a type of narrative rather than an objective report. The article uses more detail information rather than factual information. Profiles can use descriptive details while also reporting information of the process. The flow from detail to detail to describe the process feels more appropriate for a profile.

What made this a profile more than a report to me is how Kohls inserted himself within the text. “In the summer of 2012, I worked as a cleaner, on-and-off, for three months. I participated in roughly twenty-five cleaning shifts as an employee of Labor Ready, joining the agency after struggling to find journalism work in the city” (Kohls 978). By including himself within his article, he is no longer just presenting facts. Kohls is recounting his individual experience at the Rogers Centre. He does this multiple times within his article like him also referencing his interaction with the resident manager of the clean-up operation, Rosario Coutinho. “Coutinho then heads to another location where she can remain unseen and watch closely. I’m the ghost, she tells me one night” (Kohls 978). Dialogue and personal interactions seem more appropriate for a profile rather than a report.

“Clean Sweep” by Ryan Kohls was an interesting read for sure. However, this article feels more appropriate under the profile category rather than a report. Yes, it did present information on the process of how employees clean the Rogers Centre with much detail. However, the article felt slightly biased, presented the process of cleaning the stadium more descriptively rather than factually, and it felt more like a recount of Kohl’s own experience as an employee that cleaned up the Rogers Centre.
