Black Like Me by Howard Griffin

The title of the book I chose to read was Black Like Me. The author of this book is Howard Griffin. The main character of the book is John Howard Griffin, The book takes place in 1950 and 1960. It is about a iounalist who has picked the topic of racism for his next article. He dies his skin the color black to see how life is from a negroes perspective. John becomes horrified seeing all the pain and struggles negros have to go through, just because the color of their skin.

The main idea i think John Howard Griffen was trying to bring to his audience’s attention was how un-equal people are treated iust because of the colorof their skin. He gets into and really gets his reader to understand and feel the effects or raCIsm today in America. A white person Will be able to read this book and finally understand what all of the great black people of the past had to endour through out their entire lives.

John found out What it was like to get on the busses and get treated differently by the white man and receive dirty looks because of his skin.

Negroes have more things to worry about than white people do, and John realizes this during his experience, John Howard is the main character of the book. I dont think he expected for things to be as bad as they were, because if he did I doubt he would do it anyway. I would like Howard Griffen ifl met him and knew what he was doing. I would think very highly of him and respected his and his decision. I could have connected With him because if I had the chance of walking in a white mans boots for the day I would do so.

The main problem he had to deal With was raCIsm and discrimination. Of course he could not really solve the problem, at least he now knows What black people had to go through and he Will know to think again before discriminating. It is always fun to see something through someone elses perspective. I like this authors style of Writing because it is real. and everything he is explaining about is so descriptive and you always remember to your self that this is really happening, HIS writing is not to fancy so younger readers Will be able to enjoy this book. He does not go too much into detail to Where the reader gets bored, but he tells you enough so you can get a sense of how it was for him. Because so many authors of the past go so much into detail explaining their stories | get bored quickly, butl did not have that problem With John Howard Griffins book. I would deffinitly read more books by this author.

I liked the book, because it showed that all people should be treated as equals, and John showed real courage throughout the book, to prove that negroes are Just as good as white people. I think readers of this book Will have totally different view point on this book, and that why I liked it. No one person Will feel the same way about this book. That is why is Wasso controversial. After reading this book, it reminded me how cruel this world was,and in some ways still is. I will never forget reading this book, or the story it told. My favorite pan of the book was how John explained how he hitchhikes around the state, and many White people picked him up. But sadly, only one out of every 15 people that picked him up treated him as an equal. Many of the people talked trash to him and talked about how much they think the negroes should be banned. because they don’t have feelings, or any moral stature It just was sad because most of all the people that picked him up did not really even give getting to know him a chance. I would highly recommend this book to everyone from ages 13 and up.
