An Overview of Impressionism in Works of Art

Impressionism refers to a 19th century style of art that has its roots in Paris. In most cases, impressionism is viewed as the first unique shift towards modern painting. Gaining prominence in France in the late 1960s, impressionism was adopted in other countries in Europe and America. Its proprieties were artists who were against the legally accepted sanction exhibitions and as a result, well-established art institutions shunned them. Accordingly, the essay discusses how impressionism is manifested in painting in close reference to a well-known example in art.

Impressionism can be traced in paintings through an analysis of the quality of the images in regard to color and presented details.

According to Bénard (2013), paints done by impressionists’ lacks clarity of form since they fail to utilize linear perspective as an approach of differentiating the most significant features in a picture from the least relevant ones. In this regard, such paints are dominated by loosened brushwork, a feature that results in amateurish quality and unfinished appearance.

Monet’s Rue Montorgueil is a perfect painting influenced by the impressionism movement. This image is dominated by loose brush strokes and blotchy colors that were used intentionally to create movement (Young, 2015). In this work, the artist aimed at creating an image that could give people the impression of a festival. Bénard (2013) notes that with all the action and color in the image, it is challenging to distinguish flags and people. This lack of clarity is one of the characteristics of works done by impressionists.
