Character Comparison: Hermione Granger vs The Englishman

The character I have chosen to compare and contrast are Hermione Granger from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone and The Englishman from The Alchemist. These two characters have many characteristics in common and in contrast. Such characteristics in common are being well-educated, book-worms, and anti-social. Some in contrast are advancing in personality, helping others, and career choice. Both Rowling and Coelho do a magnificent job at communicating these characters in such a way as to demonstrate their personalities. Hermione and The Englishman have many things in common.

Firstly, they are both extremely well-educated Hermione starts out as a snobbish, know-it-all girl who comes to Hogwarts to further her education, and The Englishman begins as a snobbish, off-putting man who goes on the journey to further his knowledge as an Alchemist.

They are both very knowledgeable already, Hermione having read all her textbooks for the year and The Englishman knowing all about alchemy. Secondly, both characters are book»worms. Throughout their books, they are both narrated reading books all the time, and they reference quotes in books that they have read.

Lastly, they are both anti-social. Hermione spends all her time studying, until she meets Harry and Ron The Englishman spends almost the entire journey reading is books, until Santiago tells him to look around. While both characters are very similar, they contrast in many ways. Firstly, Hermione advances in her personality, while The Englishman mainly stays the same the entire book. Hermione gets saved by the two boys and then they become best friends, thus bringing her out of her shell.
