First Day of School

It can be a strange thing when a memory from the past can remain so clearly in your mind after a considerably long period of time. One of the best examples I can offer would be my first day of primary school. It was a bright sunny day, the sky was a soft shade of blue and there was a slight breeze in the air. After entering the classroom, the memories I have are not so clear, but many years on, the memories I have of the mornings events leading up to entering the classroom are almost as lucid in my mind as they were just after I had returned home from that surreal and unsettling morning.

I approached the gate of walt cisneyl with my mum by my side, this was reassuring, but I knew she wasn’t going to be with me all day. I had never felt so apprehensive in my life. The gate closed behind me and all of a sudden I was stricken with fear.

There were so many people all around me. Some young, some older, some big and some small. They were everywhere. Most of them were running around, zooming past me like racing cars, narrowly missing me by tiny fractions.

I felt so alone, like a stray dog lost in the middle of a big city. All I wanted was to be home again. I took a deep breath and walked on, weaving my way through the crowds and trying to avoid being run into by the older children.

As I walked, my eyes scanned around the playground, trying to find someone I knew. It seemed like an impossibility. Everyone looked identical, all dressed the same in their red and grey sweaters. I felt like I had more chance of finding a needle in a haystack.

After feeling like I had been wandering for hours, finally, I heard someone call my name. The voice was familiar. I turned round and saw my best friend. I felt relief. She was standing with a large group of familiar faces I recognized from playgroup. Suddenly I started to feel better as everyone in the group had a look on their face that described what I had been feeling inside. Then the bell rang and we went to our class and met our teacher who introduced herself.

She was so caring and jovial that all my fears went away and all the students in my class were so friendly. As the day went on, she tested our math skills and made us write about ourselves and what we like to do. Later she took us to the playground and let us have playtime while she gave us some snacks to eat. Finally, when the bell rang for school to end, my mother was waiting for me outside the door, but I did not want to leave. I told my mother that I had the best 1st day of school and could not wait for tomorrow to be back to school.
