Outside the tiny Italian Borgo San Giuda Trentino has been a terrible massacre of eleven people in deep winter. The day on which the sleigh is punctual as always in the church square, but without his coachman Beppo Formento and the tourists will change the life of the small community completely. The horse Zorro, which had pulled the carriage is energized; his eyes betrayed that it is terrified.
The priest Don Ermete, Beppo’s father Sauro Formento and his son Zeno immediately start their snowmobiles to search for Beppo and its customers.
First, they reach the tree that Beppo had prepared for the tourists: it is sprayed with water in the freezing cold to a transparent crystalline natural phenomenon. But today he excited not only astonishment but bare Horror: Through and through, he is red – blood. Father Sauro breaks the silence with a shriek when he discovers his brother Beppo the severed head under the snow at his feet. And among the piles of snow all around you will find many other parts of the body.
What, why and by whom was this done? First, the prosecutor takes over the investigation. One thinks in all directions: terrorists, security services, etc. Since the searches are fruitless, finally falsified autopsy results and protocols and subjects in case of strict confidentiality
The story tells of the novel from the perspective of the village priest Don Ermete and. psychiatrist Giovanna Gassion. When Giovanna was accurate at the time of the massacre a scar on a finger, in which they had cut more than ten years ago, unfortunately, broken up again for no apparent reason.
Neither the doctors nor research on the Internet helped her to explain this phenomenon. Don Ermete for some time has been working in Mindanao and stored in the Lima vows to San Giuda (Judas). When he returns to Italy, he chooses conscious for little soul village of San Giuda and ensure there years of persuasion, until the church finally the Holy Judas revered in her village church, which was rejected in Italy and elsewhere as a traitor of Jesus. Don Ermete is proud to pray taught to have.
During the daily interrogations Don Ermete feels as victims of abuse, such as lowering the property of the public prosecutor, who under him, he would not reveal what he knew , In such a way delivered, it loses more and more belonging to his community. Questions he hardly dares to face up to – about what really happened – and nagging doubts cast him into a deep emptiness. He believes in God, Mary, the saints, the sacraments, the mysteries, the miracles – and Satan. Was the carnage something supernatural? Was it a coincidence Satan – or God, who, as the Bible says, was running in his omnipotence massacre and destruction? But why did he just chose the few people from San Giuda
After the cruel events, many residents have left the city hastily?; six have died simultaneously. The rest – just twenty and almost all very old – are traumatized and in urgent need of psychiatric care. At the request of Don Ermetes Giovanna comes to the village – as a nurse practitioner, because as a psychiatrist she would find anyone inlet. But what they can achieve? These people have always lived in complete seclusion without television and newspaper; the phone the rectory has been their only link to the outside world. Different pathological appearances are evidence of inbreeding among the four regular families.
Giovanna and Don Ermete support each other, share their thoughts, both believe to know what happened in the woods. But what? Sandro Veronesi lets them express any tangible, rational, logically coherent answer. He confronts the reader with questions about God, death, the efficacy of psychoanalysis and also allows various forms of the dream as a way to understand the massacre, open. Don Ermete mentioned “the second death”, the St. Francis of Assisi as the “death of the soul” means (S. 365). Is this the final state of the villagers?
Giovanna must be their failure to admit they can not really cure but the people. For her and Don Ermete the author has to offer a way out, they go before they fall prey to the madness.
This novel is not safe to everyone’s taste. Although it is packed with action, but rather their interpretation – the interpretation options for the carnage – to some might balk energetic. There’s a lot of questionable, much Constructed much pseudo Scientific (as far as I can tell).
The two letters “XY” appear neither as a sign of trees, houses, in the cult of the dead, etc. nor even in Text. On the cover they are merged into a symbol. Is it because the female XX chromosomes, XY is the male, so for “the people” par excellence – or for the two protagonists? I do not know and leave your own interpretations, like Sandro Veronesi you leaves much food for thought …
