One of my personal achievements is to be able to help other international students to know North Seattle College as I do. For the record, I am not exactly fond of schools and it is really a big change for me to work for one. However, my desire to help international students prompted me to be their student guide in exploring the school.

I’m currently serving as a general support for international students and my main job is to be their friend and guide as they start their school life. Being their student guide gave me many experiences and insights.

Every freshman I work with reminds me of myself when I first stepped into the school. I was anxious, nervous and a little afraid. I had a very good support system in my family and friends, but the freshmen overwhelmed me as a foreign student and made me stumped in my first year.

There are things I have to experience in North Seattle to actually learn. No amount of reading blogs, articles or any content about ‘surviving’ college can prepare me back then. It’s a different thing when an actual person acts a like a guide to a confused and overwhelmed freshman. Being their friend guide has been an enriching experience and I want to continue that upon my acceptance to University of Wisconsin Madison.

For me, it’s already a small victory when foreign students come up to me to say thanks or even recommend me to other students. It’s a work I enjoy doing. Nevertheless, it has its own share of challenges. For me, the biggest challenge is these students confide acts of racism or phobia of international students. As a foreign student myself, I always try to be as neutral as possible – something I also try to share with people I’m helping.

These complicated issues take time but it always a victory when the students I guide come back to me, saying that they were able to take the higher ground and continue to study abroad and in North Seattle.
