Gender Bias in Sports Recognition

Topics: Fifa World Cup

Within sports women genuinely don’t receive as much respect and recognition professionally compared to their male counterparts, this is most prominent when it comes to the sports industry. For example, the compensation when it comes to female athletes’ earnings is a women’s version however founders and sponsors decided against it due to the disinterest of women’s sports in the eye of the public. I say if there were more sponsors and media coverage women’s sports will become more mainstream with sports fans.

But from a business standpoint, you have to agree. Also, a major factor is the participation in sports of our youth for example by the age of 14 girls are dropping out of sports at a very rapid rate compared to the boys their age. also according to my research from the women’s sports foundation, they identified the key factors in which why girls aren’t participating more in sports and I shall summarize their findings.

1. Safety and Transportation issues.

Sports require a place to participate and for many girls, especially in urban areas. that means traveling to sports events or facilities through horrid and unsafe neighborhoods or lacking any good programs within the parameters of their homes.

2. Social stigma.

Despite the recent progression in society, discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity of female athletes is very much persisting. Girls who are athletes may experience bullying and social isolation due to them being much different from the others, and during this socially fragile time in their lives, the fear of being tagged as gay is a strong enough reason why they do not participate in athletics.

3. Decreased quality of experience.

As girls grow older, the quality of how they perceive sports as an outlet will decline. Research shows that the facilities are not up to par compared to the boys, the availability of highly skilled and trained coaches is lacking in their community or if they do have the staff to Coach them they are more focused on the boy programs that have more funding. They even claim that equipment and uniforms aren’t funded for many girls’ programs the women’s foundation sees this as they aren’t leveling up as evenly as boys so their ability to grow and enjoy their participation in their sport of choice is diminished. Lastly Cost School budgets are being slashed every second of the day all across the nation. This means fewer opportunities for schools to have the programs for free which results in families paying for play in private programs.

These absurd additional expenses are not affordable for most families. What does this say about our American values well in my humble opinion I think it is all about what generates the most revenue money runs these major sports teams and if your league does not draw a dime then what’s the point of sponsoring it in a business standpoint it’s a very risky move and you will lose however on a social justice standpoint there needs to be a reform to societal standards when it comes to females in sports like I stated about with the evidence on why the female demographic between the younger ages don’t participate in which there stigmatized and not supported.
