Abstract

According to Christine Joyce S. Castañeda, a senior reporter, last 2017, electricity consumption in the Philippines rose 3.9% to 94.4 million MWh from 90.8 million MWh in 2016. Although 74% of the total power generated is consumed in Luzon, consumption only grew 3.6% annually. Electricity consumption in Visayas and Mindanao expanded at faster rates of 5.

8% and 4.0%, respectively. As technology rapidly grows, electrical energy consumption seems to become greater, the researchers thought about using renewable energy sources such as the wind as power generation.

In the current trend, mobile phones are charged by using the electricity which consumes electrical energy. The DC motor-based windmill is used to generate the electrical energy by a small wind turbine, as this wind-powered phone charger works it converts the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy then transformed to electricity that charges the phone.

This DC motor is a permanent magnet type motor which will act as a generator when a mechanical input is provided by an external rotating source.

The researchers thought of this research because they aim to help the community lessen their consumption of electrical energy to help people lessen their electrical bills which help us save money. The objective present in this research is to charge your phone using wind energy during traveling or any outdoor activities or even at home.

Introduction

Background of the study

Each year the society spends a tremendous amount of its energy resources and with the improvement of technology the growth of mobile phone market is phenomenal in recent years and the need for charging the mobile battery is required anytime and anywhere. It becomes very difficult to charge the mobile phone while traveling from one place to another and when current supply is not available while in the home, office etc. though there is power bank provided for this purpose we still consume electrical energy because we still need to charge the power bank after being used. Since mobile phone plays an important role in communication, the researchers proposed this project as an idea that we can use several resources of renewable energy such as solar, wind, wave, and geothermal to provide energy that doesn’t add to the consumption of electrical energy. The wind power is among the best candidates due to its wide availability. In addition, to produce clean energy, wind turbines also do not need any transportation fuel that can be harmful to the environment and modern wind turbines are capable to produce power at reasonable cost which causes the system to be more efficient and reliable. By using a wind turbine, wind energy will be converted into electrical energy to produce power supply which acts as a mobile charger. Traditionally, wind energy was used by erecting windmills in potential areas.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to assess the community to have more knowledge on how renewable energy works and how they can conserve energy using this prototype. This study sought to answer the following questions:

  1. How can you assure the sustainability of power?
  2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the wind-powered phone charger?
  3. What is the process of making this wind-powered phone charger?
  4. How will this prototype help us conserve energy?
  5. What is the effect of too much consumption of energy?

Hypothesis

H1: A person who uses this wind-powered phone charger will save more money.

H2: A person who doesn’t use this prototype then will consume a large amount of energy. H3: A person who always uses electrical energy for charging can cause the depletion of natural resources

H4: A person who loves traveling will use this prototype to provide the electricity they need for charging their phone.

Significance of the Study

As technology rapidly grow, we became unaware of our consumption of electricity in terms of charging gadgets such as cell phone and more. A cellphone is one of the most needed devices in our generation. It will not work without a charger. In order to be charged and use up again, it cost electricity; which involves money.

Our study about wind-powered phone charger is one way to help the community have lesser cost when it comes to the financial aspect. We all know that the wind is usually friendly to the surroundings. It is free and it is safer to use. It is reliable and efficient. It doesn’t need to require minimal maintenance and cannot spend too much cost. It can save energy and helps financial budget at home. It is readily available even if there is no current, you can still charge up the phone. It is a great advantage and great help especially to remote areas which are not connected to electricity. The Philippines is one of the countries in the world that experience vulnerable calamities. The Philippines’ exposure to disasters is a significant extent due to the country’s geographical and physical characteristics.

One of the major problems experienced by affected residences, aside from devastating deaths of many countrymen, is power shortage, it is one thing that makes their living miserable. No lights at dawn, all communications are down, and even charging of phones is not accessible. Warm communication with loved ones will not be possible without the means of charging mobile devices. Imagine a wind-powered phone charger that can charge mobile devices in times of calamities.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The researchers focused on the study on producing wind-powered phone charger. Wind-powered phone charger is a device which converts wind energy and converts it into a reusable form of electricity. This study will focus mainly on charging a cell phone. Phones are what the people of this generation mostly use. The focus of this study is to design a useful, efficient and handy Wind-Powered Phone Charger. The proposed system is limited only in lessening the use of electricity and filling a phone’s battery even while traveling. The study is conducted to show that with the help of solar energy and wind, a handy device can run on its own without any manipulation. The study included 12 students who were requested to take part in the study.

People who are in contact with the participants weren’t included as data sources. A span of almost 1 week was needed to create the system since some of its materials need adult supervision. The purpose of this study is not to replace the conventional source of electricity but rather an alternative source of power which is free of charge. The idea was to reutilize wind. The study is limited to the phone users who need less money consumption and those who live in vast areas with poor power range. An environmental-friendly and handy device can be the solution to the problem since not every individual can afford to have a power source. Travelers who need power source while on the road, sky or water can power their phones with the proposed system while traveling.

Review of Related Literature and Studies Foreign Research

According to Somya, A. Singhal and S. Agarwal (2015). Wind Turbine Charger: Insight into Future Technology (Vol. 2, Issue 6) A wind turbine, which is a rotating machine, converts the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy. If this energy is then transformed to electricity, the machine is referred to as wind generator, wind turbine, wind power unit, or wind energy converter. When there were shortcomings of massive windmill structures, a mini wind turbine – little Rutland 504 comes to rescue. Its power consumption is low, has a small size, noise resistance and portability have made the mini wind turbine quite popular over time. The modern commercially produced mini wind turbine is a vast improvement on the old farm and hobbyist models, in terms of efficiency, size, weight, and output.

The major breakthrough happened when the scientists at the University of Texas, Professor of Electrical Engineering, J.C. Chiao and UT undergraduate student, Dr. Smitha Rao brought out a prototype for micro-windmills that serve as an innovative alternative to cell phone battery charging. It is supposed that hundreds of devices can be fixed in phone sleeve to recharge the phone. As per data, 2040 devices can be planted in iPhone 4 in which each device generates electricity using wind currents. A propeller (like a wind turbine) is a type of fan that transmits power by converting rotational motion into thrust. Produced between the forward and rear surfaces of the airfoil-shaped blade is a pressure difference and accelerated behind the said blade is a fluid that may be water or air. The number of blades decides the rotational speed of the propeller and differs with the pitch angle and the angle between the blades. If there’s a greater number of blades, there is more speed output that gives more output voltage and vice versa.

Normally, the propeller is selected according to the type of application. Theoretical Background As this study talk about energy, we acknowledge the presence of the technology and its innovation throughout the years that passed by. The first theory, the theory of knowledge by Eduardo Strobbe and Julian Madeyski (2013), this is anchored to the study because it states that as the technology advances efficiency productivity of the people relies on it and will continue to grow throughout the years. By this statement, the people will deal more time in using technologies in their daily activities consuming more energy possibly making less conservation as our highly regarded problem. By this theory, the people will keep relying on technology as it advances and it also states that it will keep the people from the old methods of doing chores and environment and from this, our environment is also at risk.

The second theory, Theory of Energy Use by Luis Puch & Antonia Díaz, (2012), this is anchored to the study because it states that the short-run elasticity of energy use is smaller than its long-run elasticity. The recent evidence on energy use and energy prices suggests, though, that the short run response of energy use to energy prices has changed over time. They propose a theory where, as in the data, the short run elasticity of energy use is smaller than the long run elasticity, but it also may change depending on the rate of embodied technological progress, accounting for its increase in the recent years.

By this theory, it is known that as technology continue to prosper the consumption of energy will continue to grow which will result in loss of resources. This theory is connected to our study because it talks about energy consumption and the study that is proposed in this research will help lessen the consumption of energy. Conceptual Framework

Methodology

Subject of the Study: In this study, 12 students are requested to participate

Procedure: The materials and tools needed for this project are: Soldering iron, glue gun , wire stripper and cutter, multimeter, an old CPU fan, toroidal inductor, 2n2222 transistor, 5v step up module, 5 IN2007 diodes, perfboard, old phone battery, and a small switch. These are the steps to follow in making this project:

  1. Prepare your old CPU fan, then remove the propeller. Upon removing it you will see that there are three pins inside the fan. Solder wire into each pin and check the voltage with a multimeter, choose two wires which give the best voltage then remove the third wire.
  2. Return the propeller to the fan, then make a diode bridge and connect to the CPU fan. Then solder together a joule thief circuit then connect it to the dc output in the fan.
  3. Next, hook up the battery and connect it to the 5v step-up module and in between it two connect a switch.
  4. Get the glue gun and stick everything to the side of the fan. Then if you want to, use electrical tape to cover the side.

Results and Discussion

This proposed prototype is powered by wind, as the wind goes through the propeller it turns in the direction where the air stream flows that will produce kinetic energy. Then the kinetic energy of the rotating propeller will produce the DC voltage from the DC motor that is attached to the Propeller. In this research the DC motor works as the generator which converts kinetic energy to electrical energy, therefore, the natural energy can be utilized effectively. This wind-powered phone charger is energy efficient.

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendation

Summary In this chapter, we summarize the contributions of this research and the possible impact as we see it and deliberate about the importance of the wind-powered charger. The central problem addressed in this thesis is the waste of energy that is consumed by the people. The aim of this project is to design, construct and test a battery charger fed from a wind energy source. We can harness energy from the wind and turn this into renewable electricity. As more efficient wind harnessing technologies become available, we will be able to take advantage of this clean, renewable energy source. In this paper, we propose an alternative phone charger with the wind as the power source. This research discusses a novel type of energy converter that use wind energy technology to produce electricity. Renewable energy is a burning issue nowadays; different energy resources are being analyzed, tested and improved in order to replace nonrenewable energy resources. Wind is one of the renewable energy resources which is available in abundance, a huge amount of energy can be produced by using windmills and then this energy can be saved for later usage.

The objective presented here is charging of low power electronic gadgets using the wind energy available during traveling. The wind will blow if the sun shines down on earth. This surpasses the power bank because power banks also have limitations just like cellphones. Conclusion Wind powered phone charger is reliable and efficient unlike other power plants, wind energy charger systems require minimal maintenance and low operating expenses. In this paper a multi-directional wind powered has been investigated to charge the mobile phone while travelling. This technology can help to meet the emergency power grid requirement when electricity is not available. The wind-powered phone charger this system could be used to charge the phone for daily use. Lastly, wind-powered phone charger is friendly to the surrounding environment, as no fossil fuels are burnt to Recommendation We recommend this prototype to everyone, by creating and using this prototype we can save energy which saves us from using fossil fuels which is bad for the environment because burning of fossil fuels will add greenhouse gases.

Creating this prototype is easy and convenient to all people out there that are fun of using mobile phones it will benefit all of us and it also helps us save money and this can also be used as an emergency charger especially if there is power outage and there is a strong current of wind.
