What is being a successful student

Topics: Student

Being a successful student doesn’t necessarily mean someone who receives good academic grades, but someone who is actively involved in making their studies a priority. Successful students possess many important qualities and habits such as organization, self-discipline, effective studying and note taking, take initiative and set realistic goals. Having the ability to make a plan and manage your time wisely are significant organizational skills. The habit of being well-organized helps students meet deadlines, keep track of things, avoid small mistakes and balance work in an effective manner.

Successful students have the power to overcome distractions and procrastination by being persistent and having self-discipline. They are able to fulfill their goals by following through with their course of action despite obstacles and failure.

What successful students do

Organizing study groups, revising notes and practicing old exams are just a few of the many methods successful students use to develop effective study habits. Not only are good study skills a key to educational success, but they help accomplish goals in a efficient way.

As well, successful students take notes to keep school work organized, keep up with their studies and understand important material. Taking initiative allows students to work independently and be determined to carry out tasks when necessary. Successful students go the extra mile, work diligently and readily reach for opportunities that others miss. They also set realistic goals by recognizing their capabilities, understanding the steps they need to take and carry out their plan efficiently.

In my opinion, successful students make a plan, set goals and use their time wisely in class and at home to achieve success.

Making a plan of action ensures that you are focused and prepared to meet your goals. It also keeps you organized and motivated to do work. Successful students know how to set reasonable goals and ensure they are accomplished within an expected amount of time. They are able to manage their time and work diligently to get tasks completed. When studying, they use resources available to them and ask to get help on material they don’t understand. They choose the best study environment that limits distractions and get a study group to feel motivated as well as learn from others.

Why I consider myself to be a successful student

I consider myself to be a successful student not only because of my good academic grades but also because of the qualities that make me one. Organization is one of my many qualities that help me complete tasks with a desirable end result. When I’m organized, I am able to plan and visualize what I want to achieve and the steps I need to take to get there. In addition, time-management is another organizational skill I have. This skill helps me work more efficiently as I get more done in a shorter time period. I am able to take clear and concise notes that help me prepare for upcoming exams/tests and I would say that my study habits are efficient.

Before a test or an exam, I always rewrite my notes and condense them to understand the major concepts. As well, I make time to study and go over some of my notes each night a few days before my test and never leave all the studying for the night before. For major tests, I am able to organize a study group where each of my peers exchange notes and discuss a certain part they are assigned. I take responsibility for my actions and I understand what I need to do when working collaboratively in a group. I take initiative which allows me to go out of my way to get things done and ensure that I am ahead of the game. I come to school with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn new things. All these qualities and skills make me a successful student.

What I do to improve my school results

One step I will take in my Grade 10 year to improve my school results is to pay more attention in class and ask questions. Throughout my Grade 9 year, I struggled a bit with Math which happens to be my least favourite subject. I am able to understand most of the major concepts, but I had difficulty understanding some things along the way. I completed the course with a good enough grade (76%). However, I feel like if I had participated more and asked the teacher questions to thoroughly understand the material, I would have finished Math with a higher grade. Once I got my final mark, I knew I could have done better especially because getting a grade lower than 80 was something I didn’t get for all of my other subjects that I worked harder in. However, this year I am willing to make a change and I am determined to work harder. Whether I have to get a tutor, sit at the front of the class or ask more questions to be actively involved in important lessons, I am prepared to do whatever it takes for me to improve my results in this particular subject.

I will know that I have been successful when I do the work to the best of my ability and realize that I have made an overall improvement. To be successful, I need to put forth my best effort in everything that I do and reach my fullest potential. To be driven towards reaching success, I must also never give up even in the face of obstacles. When I get my finishing results, I must see an improvement that I am proud of in order to know that I have been successful. Once I see my improvement, I will be motivated to set larger goals and determined to do even better than before.
