Violence Against Women Should Be Ended

25th November – International Day to End Violence Against Women Knowledge

How did violence against women originate in history? “Violence against women is an age-old practice, deep-rooted in many of the religious scriptures and traditions. In many, a woman is worth less than a man—she is essentially worthless. It is still just as much, if not more, of an issue in our current day and throughout many cultures across the globe.”

Studies have shown that 1 out of 3 women have experienced either physical or sexual humiliation.

Violence against women varies from issues such as; Acid throwing and forced abortion, marriage or prostitution; to sexual harassment and killing. This has been a great issue in history and surprisingly still occurs in the current society. But how did this concept initiate? What went wrong in our ethics that imbalanced the gender respect ratio and further brought disparity between men and women in history? My knowledge question, “How did violence against women originate in history?” focuses on the same theory as stated before, using history to know how the concept of violence against initiated and ethics to understand how these notions evolved in time.

To begin with understanding how this issue instigated, it is imperative to look back in history to see the procedure of events that occurred. The study of history enables one to recognize the discovery, organization and interpretation of information about these events. To cognize why genital mutilation, honor killing and forced intercourse is still practiced, we can look back in time and relate that violence against women is rooted in the way men and women socialize; “Violence against women has been accepted and even condoned throughout history.

More than 2,000 years ago, Roman law gave a man life and death authority over his wife. In the 18th Century, English common law gave a man permission to discipline his wife and children with a stick or whip no wider than his thumb. This “rule of thumb” prevailed in England and America until the late 19th century. This implies that the belief of considering women inferior to men has always been so deeply imbedded in the mindset of societies that the evolution of this outlook has led us to where we are right now.

Proceeding towards Ethics, it is well justified that there is somewhere gap in our morals and beliefs that has led people to attack women by throwing acid or sexually harassing them. Reflecting upon our lack in ethics today, it is evident that this practice has evolved from a known custom called religion. An example of practice forced by religion can be child marriage, “Early and forced marriages can contribute to girls being placed in a cycle of poverty and powerlessness. Most are likely to experience mistreatment such as violence, abuse and forced sexual relations. This means that women who marry younger in age are more likely to be dominated by their husbands.” Ethics are moral principles that govern the conduct of human morality, if what we have been taught and learnt from our ancestors has loopholes, then their evolvement into something worse (such as sexual violence) is inevitable. Ethics, just another name of religion, is meant to be honoured and followed by respect, whether it forces a woman to not eat for days, live under a Burga for life, or die before birth because she is not of value.

History and ethics play a vital role in what we believe today, because they both are the key elements of forming our mind-set and morals. Whether it is what we have been taught, or what our religion forces us to do, they can sometimes act as a barrier and prevent us to evolve into something better.
