Tim Burton, Director of Many Films

Tim Burton once said “we can gaze into the stars and sit together now and forever for it is as plain as anyone can see we simply meant to be” – Nightmare Before Christmas (1993. Tim burton is a director of a lot movies he directed miss peregrine home for peculiar children, charlie and the chocolate factory,Edward scissors hands, Beetlejuice and the nightmare before Christmas, and a lot more. He had many influences like Dr Seuss, Roald Dahl, and Vincent Price. Started directing 1985 (intern at Disney) California institute of art.

Tim burton uses different music and sounds lighting and framing and angles to control the mood of most scenes in his movies he uses.

What’s mostly often overlooked in Tim Burton’s movies his use of non-diegetic music. In Edward’s scissor hands burton has a wide variation of music for example whenever Edward ever saw kim romantic ish song is played and a light is shone it has a foreshadowing effect to the audience that edward is starting progress feelings towards him.

Another example would have to be in charlie and the chocolate factory, the music used is used to contrast between the sad and depressing life of charlie, and factory. Sad music is played whenever charlies home is being filmed, creates a kinda like a sympathetic mood. While the factory is filmed with more of upbeat kinda music . there’s a similar style that is presented in the movie corpse bride. In the living world is set with more of dreamy ominous kinda music.

the land of the dead is filled with dancing jazz town that is bursting with life. This of course is a funny take on death that plays very well into the themes seen most often in his films.

In a lot of Tim Burton’s films, he uses lighting to show either sadness or happiness In the film Beetlejuice Burton uses high-key lighting inside of the Maitlan’s house to give it a cozy feeling, which reflects the personality of the family once that the Maitlan family dies in a car accident and the Deetzes move in they soon change the home taking away the feeling of the home, the lighting then becomes so much darker. This makes the house seem cold and uncomfortable which matches the personality of the Deetzes family. Another example is in Edward Scissorhands, peg’s town is always bright and always full of color. The town then seems so happy and full of joy, but the townsfolk are rude , disrespectful, and mean to each other. Edwards’s mansion is sown in low-key lighting.

This makes it seem like Edward is the bad guy, which is not the case because Edward is a kind, nice guy who likes to help everyone even though he has scissors for his hands. There’s another example low key lighting in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. When Charlie goes home it’s in the beginning of the movie. a high angle is used its used to show to show Charlie’s house all dark, making it look small and really poor looking and kinda sad and depressing. The lighting would want u to think that the house is boring and/or sad all the time, Charlie lives with his parents and his grandparents on both his mom and dad’s side. they are all nice, kind, and respectful to one another. This cinematic technique has great importance for these films because he used it to make his ideas to become more clearer for the audience to really get what the lesson of the movie is. Tim Burton’s lighting impacts the audience’s mood towards the movie. Burton wants to see the films in his eyes.

Tim Burton uses the element of shots and framing to illustrate a feeling of surprise and also to control the mood so it has more of an effect on the audience. He did this by using different shots like extreme close-up shots, long shots, and medium shots. An example would be in the movie Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Burton uses a short shot on the girl who eats with the back of her head. The shot helps to create a feeling of uncertainty because the audience knows that something will happen but there not sure about what will happen so they are left in a suspense. another example would be in his movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Tim burton uses a long shot because when the movie shows the glass elevator, the audience gets caught in a moment of suspense there questioning what will or what might happen next while this is happening it’s also creating a very weird and eerie mood. When tim burton uses angles it usually is to create a new mood or to change it . when he changes the shot it always put the audience in a moment of suspense usually

In all of tim burton’s films he used many different cinematic techniques each to create a different mood or feeling for the audience. Each has a different way to control the film. Music and sound and by changing the music twists the mood, burton allows the audience to know that the mood has changed as well. He uses lighting to achieve a desired effect on the audience’s feelings. Tim Burton’s use of shots and framing really allows him to create his movies more suspenseful while also giving him control of the mood.
