Thinking And Persuading on Political Topics

I have found that politics is growing topic the older you get. Figuring out my political beliefs and why I side with them is something that I am eager to keep learning about. I grew up in a family where we did not really talk about political beliefs. When I was a child my parents wanted my brother and myself to come to terms with our political standings on our own. This is something that I am very grateful for. After talking with them now that I am more mature in my thinking and beliefs it is shocking to see how different my parents and I are on the political spectrum.

I swing one way and they swing the complete opposite, making that one of the reasons that I was so surprised when taking these questioners. Even though my family and I have different views and backgrounds when it comes to politics I thought I would score in a closer range to the political views they side with, due to the fact that most people have similar beliefs to those of their parents.

However, I think that their upbringing in the United Kingdom and mine growing up in Highlands Ranch has something to do with the reason that I think differently than them. The ‘Moral Foundations Questionnaire’ and ‘Comprehensive Justice Scale’ that I took really helped me to dig deeper and figure out why I think and stand where I do. After taking the ‘Moral Foundations Questionnaire’ I was able to see a direct relationship between my values and political standing in the five psychological foundations of Morality: Harm, Fairness, Loyalty, Authority, and Purity.

My results of this questioner showed that in fact my moral foundations a line with the political party that I choose to identify with. It was very interesting to me that your morals have so much to do with politics. I always thought that you believed what you believed and that was it.

For the harms and fairness categories I scored almost exactly as those on the side I support. For the loyalty, authority, and purity categories I scored very highly which isn’t surprising to me because these are three things that I know I feel very strongly about. However, my scores for these categories still came closer to those of my political party. To dive even deeper I took the ‘Comprehensive Justice Scale’ survey, viewing my attitude towards crime and punishment. On the first graph it showed the two categories of traditional subscale meaning harsher punishments and progressive subscale meaning more rehabilitate punishments. Once again, my scores had a correlation to my political party. I scored higher on the traditional than progressive subscale. Something that was interesting to me because I see those results as me being a harsh and not as kind person, which in my opinion is not true. The second part of this survey was about different forms of punishment rather than prison. For this graph my results were scored on Traditional punish subscale and Progressive-Punish subscale.

On this graph my scores flipped I scored higher on progressive punishment rather than traditional, but as you probably guessed, I was still in a closer range to my party rather than the opposing side. Politics is something that I will never be closed minded about so it was interesting to see the scores of the two political sides compared to mine. Overall, I was very interested in my result and am going to go back to the website and take some more surveys to help me understand my political outlooks and why I side the way I do. The ‘Moral Foundations Questionnaire’ and ‘Comprehensive Justice Scale’ that I took have already shed some light on this. The two surveys showed that I do have a common ideology to one political party. At this point I am still eager to learn and figure out more about the different sides of the political spectrum and the factors that contribute to them.
