The Usefulness and Importance of Sociology to Our Everyday Lives

One of the most commonly asked questions in any subject taught in schools is “how will this help me in life?“ Sociology is a science that’s often questioned on its usefulness. Many students learning about sociology may find it intriguing, butjust have a hard time figuring out how it is applicable to our everyday lives. When examined closely it is easy to see how sociology truly is something we can apply to our everyday lives and a science that helps the world, Sociology helps us to understand the world and uses that knowledge to help the it change for the better.

Sociology also helps to improve human interaction and in the more practical sense, teaches useful things that can be applied in the job field, If you want to change the world and improve social issues, then you need to know how society works and for that you will need sociology, Sociology is defined as “the systematic or scientific study of human society and social behavior from large-scale institutions and mass culture to small groups and individual interactions” (Ferris and Stein 2016); in other words, the scientific study of human culture.

By studying human culture, we can begin to understand the world by identifying patterns in it and how and why these patterns exist. Information we get from studying the patterns of human interaction in the world can be used to understand why it is humans act the way they do, and the cause and effect that brings on certain reactions.

we can then take this information and try to figure out how to overcome certain troublesome social issues and begin the longjourney of fixing the problem whether it be on a large global scale or the social issues that we face in our everyday lives. If you are struggling with self-confidence and find yourself constantly sabotaging yourself ,you might learn about the looking glass theory (explains that our sense of self is a reflection of what others think of us and come to the decide that you never had enough positive influences in your life.

You may conclude that you should try to surround yourself with more people who lift you up in life. You may realize that maybe you are not quite as bad as you thought and that those were just negative views instilled in you by bulliesi Now how do we take this knowledge and apply it on a large scale? How do we use this to fix social issues that affect all American, or the world? Well the first step in fixing any problem is understanding how it works Just like if you were planning on fixing a physical thing like a computer, you will need to understand how it works to fix the problem if we can identify what causes negative social rifts between us then we can theoretically apply our knowledge to mend these rifts and make the world a better, happier place to liver Most people grow up hearing expressions like “don’tjudge someone til] you’ve walked a mile in their shoes” Or sometime while growing up we may have had someone ask us to try and imagine how you would feel if what was happening to someone else happened to you instead, Theses expression rely on our ability to feel empathy and the idea that if we understood someone else and their feelings and what they must go through in their day to day life than we will treat them with more compassion. Sociology applies this in a larger scale, if we can come to understand each other better, than we may think twice about negatively treating someone.

If we all understood each other a little better, it wouldn’t be quite as hard to love thy neighbor or be understanding and patient with each other; and a world with more love instead hate or crime is just a better world. The idea that learning about other people will help you be more empathetic towards them is not an unfounded notion. Teachers can see these results when teaching students about the holocaust or assigning them reading that help them view others in a different light. One teacher named Stephanie Medley-Rath saw these results first hand when she assigned her students the book “gang leader for a day” most of her students started the book with a strong negative reaction to gangs. By the time her students finished the book many of them still did not view gangs favorably but were much more empathetic to the reasons a person may have to join a gang? if one book that makes you question your beliefs’ can have such positive results imagine what the study of sociology as a whole could do to extend good will and improve human interaction, Working together for a better world is just fine; but what about the more practical aspects of sociology?

Can you make money with a degree in sociology? Even if you do not plan to use your degree for more conventional jobs that sociologist go into like being a professor or archeologist; Having a degree in sociology can give you can an edge with jobs in business, marketing and journalism,  If you are not majoring in sociology, just learning about it can help you out with finding a job Sociology helps you understand people and if you understand your interviewer you can understand what they are looking for in an employee and strive to be that perfect employee that they have always dreamed of? The people who do go on to major in sociology often getjobs that help the world, with jobs in social services, health services, law and teaching. many of thesejobs put these people in positions to help others? If you have always wanted to help the world for the better than you can find that in sociology, Contrary to some beliefs’ sociology is not a useless science? As humans, we have a drive to survive and flourish. What is more useful to our goal of survival than to better the world we live in and improve Socialization with each other? Sociology doesn‘t just impact us in a large scale either it effects our day to day life, sociology is an important science that impacts us all.
