Education for Development

In the past few years, education in Nepal has undergone a number of optimistic reforms, all thanks to the joint efforts of the government, the international organizations, civil society and the private sector. Thousands of young boys and girls have been blessed with a marvelous opportunity to illuminate their lives with the light of education, the school enrollments and the literacy rates too have gone up significantly. Together we have a long way which is really delightful, but our job is not done yet, as Nepal still has giant leaps to take, for embarking a new era of transformative education.

It’s not that we are not progressing, but in comparison to the rest of the world, out development speed is quite slow and there are still a myriad of reforms that need to be carried to uplift the status of the rural population. To boost our progress, it’s imperative that we bolster the quality of our education by updating the system with reforms that meet the needs of present and the aspirations of the future.

The system through vivid ways should stress more upon incorporating elements of innovativeness, teamwork, criticality and leadership in our learning process for facilitating holistic growth of students. Integrating academic knowledge with practical approaches is a major reform that needs to be introduced at it earliest in order to reinforce our education system, so that learner get better platforms to become more and more self-reliant, socially aware and skill -oriented. Our courses should involve students to exhibit their class room learnings in their personal and social lives.

Doing this will enable students in learning great life skills through joyful experiences while assisting them further in getting a better grasp of the subject matter. Amidst looking out for solutions to various problems, students even acquire essential problem-solving skills, which in turn fosters innovativeness and creativity in them. This potentially is one of the basic steps that can be taken at school level even to flourish entrepreneurship skills and to promote self-employment, something that is indispensable for optimum mobilization of our natural as well as human resources.

It’s another advantage is that it shall inspire students to act rather than just to stay idle and complain. Taking students out for social camps, sanitation campaigns works more effectively than hours of lectures in classrooms when it comes to inculcating responsivity and benevolence. Conducting a mock election for school leaders is great way of fostering civic sense through direct student participation. After all, transparency, accountability, fundamentals of good governance and a progressive democracy, all can be institutionalized only when the citizens are aware about their responsibilities and rights. Whether it’s about exercising right to vote or proactively involving in a local development project, the level of awareness and the sense of the righteousness in the young learners shall play a key role in shaping the future of our nation ahead.

Introducing vocational trainings at secondary level and allowing young students to pursue subjects of their choices too has multidimensional benefits. Apart from acquiring skills, students even learn a wonderful lesson of dignity of labor. Although it may not seem that big, but this meticulously helps in creation of an equitable society with equal respect for all kinds of professions. Moreover, vocational trainings cultivate economic self-reliance that further assists in poverty alleviation and employment generation. Through these programs, women can be empowered even further as financial stability provides them the additional strength to voice against oppressions and orthodox social evils. Cultural group assignments involving students of diverse social backgrounds enrich the communication skills of students and teach them to share skills while accepting differences. Inclusion of such academic tools in the learning process is vital for creation of a progressive and inclusive Nepal. Delivering quality education is insatiable without proper investment on capacity building of our teachers, keeping their morals high also holds paramount importance in this regard. A wide range of training programs should be organized on regular basis to help teachers excel and it is a must that that their professional opinion is addressed. It is an irony that this noble profession is nowadays less preferred over lucrative jobs and youngsters seem reluctant to enter in the educational field. We regard teachers as God in our culture yet it feels that we are not doing enough to honor the contribution of our teachers, who are the backbone of any education system. Our teachers deserve respect, our love is their motivation and without their sincere efforts we can never raise the quality of our education.

Another room for improvement lies in our evaluation system that grades students solely on the basis of marks scored in exams. Regular assessments, performances in projects, classroom participation, ability to co-operate with others and discipline should be also taken into account while evaluating students so that students from their very childhood, develop a concept that education is for their own full -fledged progress and merely for securing marks. Successful implantation of this idea in the minds of young children can give education a completely new dimension. Efforts should also be made to make education accessible through the aid of technology as e-learning in the long run is both cost effective and research oriented.

Be it preparing national education policies considering the manpower need in the nation or monitoring of achievements and shortcomings for effective implementation of reforms, political commitment is vital. The constructive roles of our leaders and student unions would be highly commendable in this regard while at grassroot level, co-ordination between teachers, guardians and community members is also substantially essential for upliftment of educational standards of public schools. To sum up, it is urgency of time today to carve an educational model comprising of reforms that channelizes the potentials of learners and gives them a plafrom to inculcate social responsibilities and values. For flourishing a nation full of proficient professionals and socially aware citizens, we need a sturdy foundation which is skill-based modern education.
