The Romanticism era occurred during the 19th-century, it was an art movement that would look towards nature to find the truth and meaning and is categorized by a nostalgic standpoint of native cultures. While, the Realist era happened during the late 19th-century. Which was also another art movement that was highlighted by gritty representations of the working class and emphasis on speaking-truth-to-power. Romanticism would illustrate the messages with fiction. Realist describes a message that portrays realistic situations.

The Romanticist and Realist display their differences through their writing styles for example, the Romantics mainly focuses on the plot, hyperbole, metaphor and feeling which can be seen in “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe.

Whereas the realist focuses on characters, details, objectivity and separation of author and narrator, one of the novels that has a really good portrayal to the realist is “the Gift of Magi” by O.Henry. Before, the Realist movement, there was the Romanticism movement. Romanticism was developed in the late French Literature.

Throughout the 18th century Romanticism became the forerunner, and while the French Revolution was going on a lot of writers got inspired by it. This is where the Romanticist got their most important ideas from, Nationalism. Nationalism became the main theme for romantic art and political philosophy. would deal with very idealistic views on life, everything is perfect in a romantic novel. The main reason Romanticist stories would stand out is due to their love for beauty and always focusing on the minor details that make up life.

The characters in a romantic novel are usually an over exaggeration, they did this describe what was going on a little bit more creative. For example, in the novel “The Tell-Tale Heart’ written by Edgar Allen Poe he uses the hyperbole, “It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed.” (Poe). The narrator is over exaggerating on how long it took him to get through, it really didn’t take him a complete hour to get through it. It felt so long, because he was trying his best to be careful.
