The Opinion On Dreama

Sometime this week I watched the play ‘And they came for me’ by James Still, who is an American author. The play combines several tapes of interviews with the friends of Anne Frank that were lucky to survive the Holocaust and Eva Schloss, together with other live actors that recreated the scenes of their own lives. It was performed in Germany on November 1938.

Synopsis of the play

This play is quite a unique theatrical experience. The live actors are recreating scenes from their experience of Second World War.

The first boyfriend of Anne Frank was Ed, and Anne wrote something about him when her popular diary was beginning. Eva Schloss was an age mate to Anne Frank and they used to live within the same apartment house in the city of Amsterdam. Both the family of Ed and that of Frank went to hide at the same time, actually the same day. Just as it was the same case with the family of Frank, they were also betrayed.

It was Eva’s fifteenth birthday that her family got arrested and sent to the concentration camp by the Nazis. Only Eva together with her mother survived the arrest, and after Second World War had calmed her mother was married to Anne’s father, called Otto Frank.

Analysis

The play is in English. The characters are clearly heard. They pronounce every word correctly and so communication to the audience is perfect. In terms of plot, the play does not end very well. There are no surprises there.

However, there is actually no melodrama nor shock factor in a play which is portrayal of losing a member of Hitler Youth known as Coupland and also for the European Jewish Community. Regarding the teenager, the suicide by Hitler together with its consequences leave him perplexed. He wonders what will follow next, because he has been indoctrinated in beliefs and the philosophies of Third Reich.

Use of multimedia since many years past is an indication of the actual footage of interview from both Helmuth and Eva Schloss, which is termed in the diary of Anne Frank by his nickname at that time ‘Hello’ in a way that after Anne meets him the greeting would be ‘Hello Hello’, and the parting though the play does not feature it, would be ‘Goodbye Hello’. Ed appears a bit confusingly popular within the play and the entire cast banks on some other characters which are between the two, and the efforts to shift between the characters appear futile.

This play is not totally without humour. However, some explorative and more philosophical elements of the diary are glossed after a brisk but clear overview of the scenes that lead to abrupt death of the diary which took place following discovery of Nazis on where the family of Frank and other Jews were. Harsh conditions and brutality in concentration is mercifully described and not dramatized. Selection of the still photos from that era are underlining the great desperation condition in which the characters eventually find themselves in.

The music, lighting and sound effects at the beginning of the drama are cool and set the atmosphere for the play. The costumes by characters are coherent with the theme and the setting. Each character assumed their role appropriately and so I enjoyed watching all of them. Generally, the production maintains some good pace with just a few props. The changes in scenes are greatly smooth. The moment when Jews complained over their belief with some justifying facts that there was an increase in anti-Semitism in various places, such a show couldn’t be appropriate. At times, such a thought-provoking and poignant view is not comfortable. However, the drama is worth seeing.
