The Issue of Censorship in Today's Society

As the world progresses, expressions and words evolve, gain new definitions, and are associated with different connotations Similar to the development of words, social constructs are redesigned to either accommodate or ostracize groups of individuals that share similar qualities. In today‘s society while some censorship is provided for words that are deemed prejudicial, many situations consist of these terms being used in an ignorant way due to desensitization and preconceived notions. Many of these words are not offensive unless they are used in a disrespectful manner.

The issue is when these terms become a synonymous way of expressing a negative concept. Oftentimes, the interchanged words that are chosen to convey a negative idea are aspects of a person’s individuality and do not have any correlation to the actual definition of the used words.

Some of the most common unnecessary phrases are composed of sexual orientations being substituted for adjectives within the wrong context The expression “That’s so gay!” is used to describe an unpleasant situation or unfavorable outcome.

Why does there have to be a negative stigma attached to a non»heterosexual sexual preference just because it differentiates from the norm? Who has the right to decide which sexual orientations are or are not conventional? While the term “gay” is misrepresented in that context, it is also improperly used when speaking of a person, In many situations, when someone is describing someone who is heterosexual they will refer to various traits, whereas when they are describing someone who is non-heterosexual they will refer to them as their sexual orientation.

Sexual preferences should not be used as a dominant characteristic of others, simply because it cannot summarize an entire person, Another way of generalizing others is done through assigning various concepts, objects, tasks, and common interests to different genders These stereotypes are implemented at such a young age that people become accustomed to striving to maintain an image that may eventually limit themselves Reinforcing certain expectations through the use of insensitive comments such as “boys will be boys” or “act like a lady” generate excuses for inappropriate behaviour as well as set preconceived notions which enforce harmful mindsets for any person.

Rather than imposing standards based on gender, a supportive environment in which the anatomy of one’s body does not define their aptitudes and characteristics should be created, Society’s morals are dependent upon the mindset of those who are in it. There are many prejudicial stereotypes and expressions used in reference to minority groups depending on the similarities they share The way in which we choose to treat others, address concepts, and solve problems can either hinder or advance us as a species. It is up to every individual to contribute in fostering an open and tolerant society to allow for growth, which can only be achieved through the appropriate use of communication.
